ls1 brake upgrade for 3rd gen
ls1 brake upgrade for 3rd gen
i posted this in chassis and suspension figuring i'd get a better response if i ask in the right category, but no one has responded so i'll ask in my favorite category
i'm looking into this upgrade
http://www.bigbrakeupgrade.com
and i hear that i can do this for alot cheaper by getting my own rotors and calipers elsewhere, shaving down the stock rotors down to the hubs getting longer wheel studs and buying the bracket, and modifying my spindle
now here is my question
should i try and modify my spindles myself
should i send this guy my spindles to be modified for $75 or
should i buy the spindles with the brakets for an extra 70 bucks
now i can gain access to a jigsaw or something and butcher the spindles myself
i'm just not sure where to stop cutting and then what can i use to drill the holes andhow can i be sure of the position of the holes? i have yet to see a template
the car is off the road so i can afford to send my spindles away for a week or two
or should i just shell out the extra 70 and buy new spindles, and then maybe sell my spindles on ebay to make back a lil money

If you're not sure of yourself on the spindles, just buy them and the brackets assembled. If the car is not a daily driver, pull your old spindles and send them in. That $70 you save might just buy you the rotors and calipers if you find the right guy parting out a car, not to mention the fact that his spindles are not "new," they're just cut-drilled-and-cleaned junkyard parts anyway. Take your old rotors to a machine shop and have the friction surface cut off and the hub turned to size (probably run you less than $50,) and put the longer studs in yourself. You can get the final dimensions you need for the hub by searching in the brakes forum at TGO. It's more leg-work, but you should be able to get it done for a little over half what he wants for the "premium" kit.
While you have everything off anyway, get some braided hoses. Don't skimp on the pads, either.
FWIW the spindle mods are exactly the same as those done for the 1LE brake swap. Search for more info on that.
edit: 2000 posts, go me.

Re: ls1 brake upgrade for 3rd gen
thanks for some actual information and suggestions, the other forum ignores anytyhing 3rd gen
anyway, i'm sure i can hack off the ears easily, and i'm sure if i drilled the holes in the right spot on my spindles i can tap them fairly well, i just dont have a template to follow
i am definatly not getting the premium kit since i work for autozone i can get rotors and calipers and hoses cheaper than most
i'm still gonna go with some aftermaket crossdrilled and slotted rotors and i'm definatly going with ceramic pads, no question
and its easy for me to get my rotors turned down to just the hub, i have some access to a lathe, i'll buy the wheel studs through this guy cuz i dont wanna take a chance on the wrong studs, (its a real pain to get wheel studs or lug nuts in autozone, the drawers are always a mess)
so yea, i suppose its a question of whether i send him my spindles or buy spindles from him and sell mine on ebay
i dont think i'd get very much on ebay

Re: ls1 brake upgrade for 3rd gen
a buddy and me are buying the premium kit from this guy soon.
Here in Europe you don't find many wrecked f-bodies, so we can't just go out to a junkyard and buy some used parts

Re: ls1 brake upgrade for 3rd gen
i know with the ls1 upgrade i have to have at least a 16 inch rim
i hear the c5 caliper is almost identical and it will fit most 16 inch rims, but not all
anyone now any details about that? cuz i figure i'd run 16 inch stamped steel rims for my snow tires and run the good street tires on the nice rims, will 16 stamped steel clear the c5 setup?
also if its not so hard to modify the spindles, how do i know i didnt mess it up, any template or anything? a guide to follow? i might get junkyard spindles

Re: ls1 brake upgrade for 3rd gen
Modding the stock spindles is the exact same way for the factory 1LE brake set-up. I found one from the TGO tech articles. And for the C5 brakes clearing a 16 rim, it wont. You'll have to have a 17" or larger rim to clear the 13" rotors.
Re: ls1 brake upgrade for 3rd gen
as Randy said you will have to go with the C4 setup and not the C5 if you retain a 16inch rim.
or the C4HD will fit the 91-92 16's but not a GTA rim.
If you need someone to do the spindles/rotors and brackets for you E-mail me at chris@cecoatings.com
I have access to a lathe, mill, cnc burn table etc at a good buddy of mines. I have tons of C4 C4HD and C5 brackets, hub on hand. and can easily do a set of spindles also.
