ls1 3rd gen
ls1 3rd gen
Has anyone put a LS1 in a 3rd gen? I used to have a 88 WS-6 TA and I'm dying to get another one, minus the t-tops this time. But I plan on getting a LS1 t56 combo. They are getting cheaper and cheaper on e-bay. Just wanted to know for future planning if I'll run into any problems. It seems with the weight diference I'd be even faster than the newer Z's and TA's!
Very people have done this swap. Even less into a 3rdgen. One reason is the cost, and the other is the amount of work. It will require A LOT of fabrication. It's not a fairly straightforward swap like a LT1.
Expensive, yes...but worth it ....

it's been done alot, don't let it scare you.........but you will need some good fabrication skills or a shop that knows their stuff.
i wanted to do it a while back; but it isn't practicle unless you get one for a "steal" 2,000 or less or i wouldn't attempt it. you can build a stock motor to out perform for less.
especially since it's more and more common it's not like you'll be the first or tenth or......... you get the idea.

It's not a PITA, it's just a big project. It costs a little bit to do it, but it is a cheap way to keep the great looks of the 3rd gen and have the most powerful Chevy small block ever made! I'm around TPI's and LT1's every day, and while I like them all, the LS1 is in a league of it's own!

Not having the ability or the resources or the equipment makes stuff rather difficult when it comes to fabricating, etc.

After all the $$ Ive spent I wish that I could have gone with an LS1 setup when I did the TPI elimination back in 98. Needless to say, a LT1 swap was unheard of at the time...hell I was one of the few that did the T-56 swap....
The LS1 is a kick *** motor... and 350+ cfm from ported factory production heads...wow.

LS1 is a beautiful motor; but it isn't cheap in any way. unless you get a smokin deal on the complete engine itself it isn't worth it.
now most of these prices are guestimates, but let's say you are lucky enough to find one for 1,500.
you'll still need a trans so add another 500+ if your lucky.
now let's get a computer........say 800+.
your also going to need a harness..... 500+.
now unless you know how to fabricate and have the tools your looking at around 1,000+.
and let's not forget all the other odds and ends and this is getting a unbelievable deal. you could build a small block to have more power for less.
now for the prices that most people who are doing this swap you could have twice the amount of power.
it's just not practicle yet..........

I will be doing it next week and onward
I got a 98LS1 40k for with gas tank, comp, exhaust, etc- $3250
92 RS V6 70k -$1500
Wiring harness-$1000
Mounts-Couple hundered
Adjustable clutch master cylinder-$250
The car looks rough so it will be the true sleeper...I was going to do it to my 92 but its too nice to cut up...

yeah, that's the other thing i had a hard time with; i just asume put the money into the small block.
my project car that's another question.......although 2k is about the highest i would go on the LS1 unless it had a trans or computer or both.
