im rebuilding my 350, so i put a bigger cam and ported my heads out... i wanted to ask if its ok to stick with the stock lifters, or do i need to get new lifters for my cam? i know it would be better to get new ones, but if it would still be OK to use my stock ones, i'd rather do that since i know money doesnt grow on trees like i wish it would lol

 

yeah, if you have roller lifters you should be ok. But it would still probbaly be good policy to put the lifters back into the samel lifter bore they came out of.

If you are using regular hydro lifters, they are dirt cheap anyway so get new ones. Alot of cams come with them.

 

thanks. dirt cheap? ehh... i havn't seen any for dirt cheap. im about to order a bunch of sh*t off summit in a few... if u know of a cheap hydrolic roller lifter on summit, let me know, ill look into it

 

You can get Summits lifters for $56, but what kinda cam are you gonna buy? You cna probbaly get a cam kit that will come with lifters pretty cheaply.

ROLLER lifters you can reuse. Just polish them a little bit with an emory cloth and you'll be good.

The dirt cheap ones are flat-tappet and you really do need to change them whenever you change the cam.

You should have just bought a cam kit though, it would have saved you alot of money, and you really shouldnt re-use flat tappet lifters.

 

i dont know if your new cam is a hydraulic roller or not but.....
if it isnt and you already have a roller cam you must buy new lifters as well. you cant use roller lifters with a non roller cam!!!

Well then you may have to buy new lifters anyway. Because Im pretty sure you have to use roller lifters with a roller cam, and although the 87+ blocks came equipt for roller lifters didnt they still come with flat tappets?

Some of the '87 motors still had flat-tappet cams. GM changed over that year and most of the cars were roller IIRC.

Some trucks got flat-tappet cams all the way up until like '94 or so.

 

His motor should definently be a roller cam motor. I am using that exact cam in my 350 now. I used to have a 87 305 TPI roller cam motor. I used the lifters and pushrods out of that 305 in the 350 with that cam. The motor has over 25,000 miles on it now and the motor the roller lifters came out of had 144,000. No problems so far.

And as far as I know all LB9 and L98 motors from 87 up had the roller cam in it. Even my brother's 91 RS 305 TBI motor had a roller cam in it. It was week, put the lifters were definently roller lifters.
