i think itd be a waste too, unless you did a ton of bolt ons that could be swapped to a 350 long block later on.
"..and besides when i start makin more $$$ in a few years, that sucker is outta there no matter what kinda power it makes at the time, cause when i can spare 6 or 7k im goin either 383 or big block, so i dont need a million hp yet"
i love it when ppl read the first 2 or 3 posts and not the rest of the thread.....

i read the thread then posted what i thought.
Stock, LG4's are downright pigs powerwise. I never down anyones car, especially a camaro, but the fact is that the motor isn't fast at all. They can be made fast though, a magazine did a write up on how to get 300 hp out of a LG4. Took a LOT of stuff though. If you want to do it with a 305, youd be much happier if you went with a TPI 305. They have great potential, and can be had with a 5 speed, which the 350's couldn't claim.Another thing is that in the final years of the third gen, the top 305 with a 5 speed and G92 option was only 10 horsepower less than the 350, and you could have a stick!
My brother had a LG4 in his 87 Monte Carlo, and he had some very minor mods, and the car was just SO incredibly slow
You can make them fast, but you really have to change everything in and on the engine to make them fast. Its 4am, so if this comes off confusing, ignore it, i need sleep

im not crazy about TPI's , they make good torque but they run outta breath around 4800 rpm or so, ive dirven my cuzin's 87 trans am tpi 305 and i wasnt impressed at all, like i said ppl the LG4 isnt a perminant motor, its only TEMP UNTILL I CAN AFFORD A CRATE MOTOR in a couple years ...
Forget about TPI for power. They run out of breath at 4500 rpm.
Use the good old QJet that came with the engine and do what I said to begin with. The rest of these guys are just spouting to hear themselves

I say if it's a temporary motor why put so much money into it. To me that doesn't make sense. I plan on building my 305 up to 250 horses just because I don't want to put to much money in a motor that i'm not going to keep. And besides the bolt ons (minus the TB) I can just switch over to w/e I decide to drop in it next. I'm not bashing your plans, it's your car do what u want with it I just don't see the point in spending a whole lot on a motor that is "Temporary" when u could be putting that money back for your crate motor.
Just My 2cents.................J Byb

to me, spending money on a temp motor is fine, intake, cam, headers, ya know, its not an ungodly amount of money, and when i take it out i can always put it in something else, or i could sell the whole engine or sell the performance parts.........not like im puttin 50 or 60 grand into it
The TBI 305's were rated 170 hp, I believe the LG-4's never got above 160. Carcraft did a buildup on an 82 305 from a Camaro and managed to get well over 300 hp from it with Vortec heads, a better cam and headers and intake. Not bad considering how crappy it is in stock form. The LG-4 in my 84-Z28 was so slow it was pathetic. If I still had it I would have no doubt put a 350 in it.

When I first bought my 86 Trans am back in Dec of 99, I had Zero knowledge of engines. I thought all V8's were the same.
I was unfortunate to have a Trans Am with the lowly LG4 motor, but it wasn't too slow.
14.94 @ 91.67mph in the 1/4mile with a carb and intake swap, everything else was stock.
I slapped a TPI setup with TPI heads and a cam in there and got a 14.1 @99mph with a crappy 2.3 60' time.
I've got a few vids of the car,
This is with the TPI and Cam,

Luray is a nice place, went up to the caverns one weekend, was a spur of the moment thing.
