L98 in a 4th gen
L98 in a 4th gen
A neighbor wants to get rid of his 95 Z28. Its got a rod knock so he went out and got a new motor. only thing i'd have to do is drop the motor in. Heres the deal though, he got an L98 instead of an lt1. He told me that the blocks are the same and that could take the heads cam ETC and swap it over to the l98 and i'd have an LT1. Is this true? Has anyone else ever done it?
LT1's are the only SBC's to have "reverse cooling". the coolent is pumped though the heads first and then into the block. All other SBC's have the coolent pumped into the block first and then into the heads. Also the LT1's use a front mounted "opti-spark" distributor not the "normal" rear mounted type. The water pump on the LT1 is driven off the cam., not belt driven like the L98.
You can't just swap parts and make the L98 an LT1. I'll bet the reason he is selling everything is because he found this out. If you try and put the L98 with the rear mounted dist. in the 95 you have to cut a big hole in the fire wall.
You would be far better off selling the L98, and finding a low miles used LT1. Or buy one of the rebuilts off E-Bay. They don't make these any more, so you can't get new ones.
