Re: knocking noise?

If it's that bad it's probably a bad bearing, i.e. rod knock. To be sure you are going to have to find someone with experience to listen to it.

Re: knocking noise?

Sounds like a spun rod bearing to me.

Re: knocking noise?

you could pull the plug wires one at a time, and run the vehicle to see if the noise goes away - if it does, it's a most likely a rod bearing/wrist pin/broken piston. Next step might be pop the valve cover on the noisy side and check for a broken rocker arm/busted pushrod/broken valve spring - if that's not it, check the torque convertor bolts to make sure there not loose or missing... if that's not it, then you prolly need to pop the motor out and start saving your pennies for a new one or a rebuild...

Good luck, let us know what you find...

Would this really work? I would think he would still get that sound because even though that cylinder isnt getting detonation, its still moving in the same motion as if it were.

Yes, but there is a noticable change in the sound, gets softer, if it's a bearing.

yup, because the loadest part is from the piston being forced down by detonation and the rod hits the crank hard
