Kid from school bought an IROC...

Hey guys. A kid I know from school just bought an IROC for $500. The 8th digit in the VIN is an "8", so it was originally a 350. Also, the decals have the 5.7L TPI on them. However, the gauge cluster is only a 115mph one. I am guessing that there must have been a cluster swap? Here's some info on the car:

Late 80s IROC 350TPI
- Body isn't bad, just needs cleaned and possibly painted, but not the whole car (maybe just a nice solid buffing).
- Interior is dirty and the dash is of course cracked on the corner on the driver's side, but would look much better after a good detailing.
- Engine compartment is somewhat dirty, but a good detailing here would also greatly help. Looks mostly stock, distributor cover part of the plenum is missing so there might have been an upgrade there, but seems to be a virgin IROC (bought off a lady who wanted it gone because the Check Engine light was on).
- Does not seem to run solidly. Throttle response is kind of off. Are you guys thinking full tune up and good fuel system cleaning, and what else are you thinking for making this thing run nicely?

Thanks guys.

yeah, that's the first thing. You need to find what's causing it to run poorly and address that first. Once you get that straightened out, you can do the usual tune-up stuff.
