K&N filter & exhaust
I have a stock 90' 5.7 right now. I want to do a few things for performance/sound, nothing major. First question is, does just the K&N filter alone do anything for performance on our cars, or is it worth it to put the whole K&N intake in. Any other intakes work any better? 2nd is, what exhaust is good for a nice mean sound, hopefully just muffler and pipes, i don't have all that much money right now. What brand would you recommend for that?
Thanks
Thanks
a k&n by itself does not do very much for performance. you would prolly do better if you hacked your stock air box to allow more open area for it to gather air from.
just a muffler will change the tone nicely. everyone knows the flowmaster sound, hooker aero chambers sound pretty mean, and a dynamax bullet really opens up teh exhaust note

I was thinking of getting an SLP Loudmouth catback, but I can't afford it right now, sounds amazing on a website i found. I think i'm just going to go with a flowmaster muffler and tailpipes. Any opinions on how this will sound on my 350? Should I expect to see any Hp increase from just the muffler/tailpipes? Any suggestions on a good intake system, or is my best cheap bet just putting the K&N filter in there?
a muffler by itself doesn't really lend any noticable power increase. teh further you are from teh engien the less the effect of an exhaust mod.
the loud mouth sounds really cool and has very good fit and finish from what i have heard, but it is sooo expensive.
your best bet for an air intaek would be to hack your stock air box. it will give you a lot more gain that just putting a high flow filter in and it will cost a lot less too.

Many people install open air filters under their hoods, and I did too at first, because it was less restrictive than the stock setup. However, many people told me I was better off using the stock air filter box and piping in cold air to it rather than using the hot air under the hood. When you look at how much the air density decreases (oxygen content lowers) as the temp rises, combined w/the high temps under the hood, you see that there is actually more benefit to a cold air intake rather than an open hot air intake.
I have the 3 inch random tech cat back on mine and Ilove the way it sounds. Also it doesnt resonate inside the car as much as the flowmaster I had on before it did. K&N filer will make a small differance in high rpm. You might as well wait till u have the cash to do the cat back it's worth it.

I would go cat-back and gut your airbox, the K&Ns can come later. The larger diameter pipe will help much more than the muffler which as stated before is so far down the tube that its effect is not substantial (as is the poor tubing). The cat-back brand would not matter as much, just make sure its 3 inch mandrel bent. the muffler is up to your preference in sound. I really like the Flowmasters and Hookers sound, (flowmaster on my 86 LB9, hooker on my 93)

Is a catback system just the tailpipes, muffler, the bent pipe piece and the longer piece going up to the catyltic converters or does it include the converters? If it doesn't, how will a 3" mandrel bent pipe really do much more for performance if I already have 3" pipe there?

The factory pipe from the cat to the muffler is only 2 3/4 or 2 7/8ths of and inch and not manderal bent. it may not seem like alot but when you have a crappy flowing exhaust like this any bit helps and this helps in dividends. Also if the Govt doesnt check for it there the removal of the cats will help big time.

I didn't find a noticeable difference by adding the K&N filter either. I did notice much difference though after I added the Dynomax Super Converter and Dynomax Super Turbo muffler. It's not the loudest car around (we'll see if headers changes that), but it's tonnes better on gas and it does sound better. Times at the track improved as well after the exhaust work. Hope this helps.
