just bought my first camaro:)
just bought my first camaro:)
i just bought a very clean '89 camaro RS 5.0. 45k miles, N.corlina car(very very solid), runs great, T-Tops, 2200.im very excited and i think i got a steal, she's going to need some work mostly interior. has a tear in driver side seat, dashboard is cracked, chip in paint on front bumpber cover, headliner is missing, somebody put a stupid aftermarket steering wheel on it, it has no horn button. my stepfather has plenty of 3rd gen parts, he bought an IROC awhile back as a doner car for his '84(he wanted a TPI engine). so i already have a sterring wheel, a replacement seat, and another set of tires(he is going to use the IROC 16" wheels and his 84 was 15". my 89 RS is 15". what do you guys think
Re: just bought my first camaro:)
i dont have an pics yet. i'm picking her up monday, i already placed a deposit on the car so she is mine. im hopping that she's better on gas than my 94 s10 blazer 4.3cpi, 4wd. i like my blazer but it's getting less pratical by the day. takes me $49 to fill it up now, yuk. my car has a 5.0 TBI, and according to fueleconomy.gov my truck only get 16/22 my new car gets 17/26 which is a vast improvement. i probably wont do too many performance upgrades to my camaro other than eventually a high-flow exuast and a K&N aircleaner. gas prices are brutal @3.07/gal. if i can have a fun car to drive that sounds good and get good millage. i wouldnt buy a v6 camaro, thats pointless doesnt even sound that a camaro should; and i wont ever drive a honda civil, little **** cars from hell
Re: just bought my first camaro:)
As the owner of a 90 RS 5.0 with high mileage (162K), I can tell you that you are buying one of the most reliabe cars made IMO. Mine has been absolutely amazing, and still runs great today. I get 19-23 MPG with a mix of city & highway driving, and mine is an auto. Congrats on the purchase!
Re: just bought my first camaro:)
so i can expect much improved gas millage with my new car? my truck is a 94 s10 blazer 2dr 4wd 4.3cpi. it's also a good runner but a 3.07 for regular it was getting expensive to drive(16mpg on a good day). i do alot of thruway driving so i hope im in for a little change. i wanted something that gets decent millage, still has some performance and isnt a honda or a toyota. i will never drive a civic too many of the on the road already, yuk. my wife is getting my s10 blazer, she loves that truck as much as i do. how well does a 5.0 RS perform? i'm hopping it still has some power, i was going to get a 5.7 camaro but decided against it, I NEED GAS MILEAGE BADLY. these oil companies are crooks. my car is also an automatic (700-R4 4 speed), 5.0 TBI. sounds funny but ive always liked the 305, i can always upgrade the performance latter; if fuel ever goes down to a sane level
Re: just bought my first camaro:)
i wouldnt complain about the aftermarket steering wheel the stock steering wheel for that year and model is gay its ugly as can be i should know my frined had that year and model and i have an 88 with it it makes me so unhappy.
Re: just bought my first camaro:)
the steering wheel that is on the car is missing the horn button. my stepfather is a third gen nut and he bought a iroc parts car, so he has 2 of everything. he is restoring a 1984 using a TPI 305 and a 6 speed t56(pretty cool huh). i will have an IROC steering wheel which looks great, i think
Re: just bought my first camaro:)
Congrats on the camaro. I had an 89 RS (made into a Iroc-z clone). Damn good car. It had over 200,000 on it when I sold it and I see it on the road alot and still runs good.
Re: just bought my first camaro:)
hey,
i also have a 5.0 TBI with manual T-5 gearbox and 3.42 rear end, i get 30+ MPG on highway and about 20 MPG in city driving (LONDON, United kingdom). I had it slightly modded with an LT1 camshaft and appropriate valve springs. It's also got MSD blaster coil , accel cap & rotor and MSD 8mm wires. Also has an open air filter. I'd say the engine has above 140K miles on it and on a worn gearbox (shifter and synchro rings long gone) i can get a time of 7.5-8s in a 0-60 sprint. The last mod i want to do is change the intake manifold to a weiand idle-6000rpm and maybe get the heads ported slightly - i then hope to get around 6,5 to 0-60mph.
very good engines but definately not for high-reving but overall mid-range power and torque, lots of fun i must say.

I have an 89 Iroc 305 and I had an 89 RS and only get 12 to 13 MPG. I've read before about some of you 305's getting high gas miles. How do you do it, I don't get it.
PS I do have a heavy foot.
