Cat is probably clogged/melted.

Also, could be tons of ignition misfire (which causes the cat to clog as well).

Might also be fuel pump on its very last leg, or the carb is seriously out of whack. But 2000 rpm is very low. Unless you're seriously flooded. Is it blowing smoke out the exhaust during this (super rich), or is it popping and spitting through the carb (super lean)? Or is gurgling (clogged cat)?

The 86 really doesn't use much electronics. I have one. They do however have a TON of vacuum lines. But, even if all of them are off, it'll still run better than what you say yours is. The carb is still mostly an old fashioned carb, but has a small bit of trim ability for light loads. This leads me to the cat being the problem.

Good Luck!

I'm thinking the same thing! Sounds like your just throughing parts at the car without knowing whats wrong. Try disconnecting the "Y" pipe at the exhaust manifold and see it it will rev. freely.
