Some TCs have a drain plug but if it doesn't, go to the pet store and buy the cheapest kitty liter you can.

Good advice Aklim.

And Liquid...I wouldn't call it talent as much as getting lucky. I usually dump half the contents of the converter all over my boots.

Most of our 700R4s don't come with a drain plug but has anyone ever drilled a hole and put one in for our trannys?

In the "OLD" days guys would drill a hole and put a screw in ti to plug the hole. Only occasionally the srew would come out(ewww messy),plus it would work wonders on the balance of the converter. With todays tolerances I don't think this would be a good idea.

There are drain plug kits for the tranny pan (although I've never used one,) or you could use a gas tank sump AN fitting.

Ford used to use drain plugs in the TC from the factory...the weight of the plug will offset the material removed when drilling the hole so balance isn't much of an issue. If you're really picky you could have it balanced at a machine shop easily enough.

if your going to start drilling holes for tranny pan plugs, id just purchase a new pan with the plug already in it. what are they like 40-50 bucks? not to mention some hold extra fluid which is another improvement

I like those pans with the cooling fins too. Unfortunately that might not be the best thing for people with lowered cars.

[ B]I do not think that the amount of material removed from a thin piece of sheet metal would weigh anywhere close to the weight of a plug, even if it is made of aluminum. Balance is a big issue especialy at high RPM.

If you really want a plug do it while the converter is out of the vehical and as J says have it balanced,or some after market converters have plugs already in them so maybe perchase one of them.

I'd put a tranny cooler in before I would even consider puting a finned deep dish pan into a lowered car. I would not lower my car unless I am trying to get competitive in the autocross.

The thing about that is that TC's are not made of sheet metal. They're very thick gauge steel...if they weren't then torque would tear them in half. Aftermarket converters may be thinner, but stockers are about 3/16" thick all the way around.

J , I respect ,and have always pretty much agreed with your oppinions on differant topics, but I still disagree with you on this(no flame intended). TC's are made of sheet metal weather they are 3/16" or 10ga. it is sheet metal. I've been a metal fabricator most of my working career and I will bet that even if the TC was made of 1/4" cast iron, and you drilled a 1/2" hole in it (which you wouldn't)you still would not equal the weight of the plug. Like I said in my earlier post people used to ,and maybe still do drill like a 3/16" hole in the TC and put a sheet metal screw as a plug (yes the weight is close) ,but they do tend to leak ,and even come out on occasion due to vibration and such.
