inspection plate on T56...

Hey guys! Just wondering if all T56's require the inspection plate.

I bought a T56 kit but haven't installed it yet. I helped a friend install his clutch and tranny on a '97 and he had an inspection plate.

I know their are some variances in T56's... is this one of them or do I need to go hunting for this plate?

Thanks!!

What do you mean by inspection plate? Theres a plate on top of the tranny, forward of the shifter, that allows access to the shift gates and skipshift solenoid that's vitally important because it keeps dirt out of the trans. There's also a dustcover that bolts to the front of the bellhousing which is less important, it just keeps rocks and things from hitting the back of your flywheel. You could get away with not having that one but I personally don't recommend it.

I'm talking about the second one you mentioned. It bolts up to the bell housing.

Were would I get one? Could I just make one out of plastic?

Making one is fine, just make sure to notch out for the back of the pan and for the starter snout to protrude. You can also probably find one at a junkyard for a couple bucks.

The GM unit is very cheap and made to fit perfectly.... $4 for me with my discount plus another couple for the proper bolts for it. Find someone that works at a GM dealer and have them pick it up for you with their discount.

I took a quick look around and couldn't find my receipt for that purchase.... Sorry man . Any decent counterman at the dealer will be able to find it for you in short order though .
