Info on stock '86 305
I just recently came into possession of a nice stock dark red '86 Camaro SC 305 (H-code), red interior. I've never been much of a Camaro person, but it's a decent car. 305 with 4BBL, auto 700R4, T-tops, no options at all except power hatch (even has the awful standard cluster gauge). I'm curious what MPG it gets, can't find the data. Also, what it'd run stock in the 1/4 mile.
It's definitely not going to be a racer; I have my Lightning for that. It's more for my 80-mile/day commute to work, where my Lightning just guzzles gas. But, it seems a pretty quick car for getting around town
Are there any typical first/cheap mods.. the emphasis being on driveability and MPG rather than horsepower

Go to www.thirdgen.org and look through the Tech Articles for relevent info.
just get a good tune, with new plugs, wires, cap, filters.
for some more power and a bit more gas milage you can do simple intake and exhaust upgrades.
look into a dual snorkel cold air intake box (seen an ad in the back of "car craft"), and a K&N filter. you could also try a carb spacer to give better combustion (not sure if it will fit under the hood though). and remvoe the cats (probably clogged anyway) and put a better flowing muffler on it.
you could get a complete cat back but with the low power of the engine in stock form i doubt you'd gain much to offset the price.

I'm looking up all this info now; now that I know what to look for
I'm leaving the exhaust stock, though. I made that mistake with my truck... Bassani headers, Bassani high-flow cats, Bassani catback, EXTREMELY loud and droney:

Sounds good, but not for a daily driver. Haven't worked with carbs for a long time either... this is looking to be a good hobby car at least, to relearn this stuff. And the look is still growing on me... I'm a mustang man at heart
