Which Ignition Coil Should I Get?

as the subject states, which ignition coil should i get? accel, msd or hyper-tech? i have new plugs, accel cap and rotor, and accel 8 mm wires... i was curious though, if i got a new coil, would i be better off getting the accel 8.5 mm wires rather than the 8 mm that i have? or does it really not make a difference? i could sell my 8 mm wires to my friend and just buy the 8.5's if they make a difference, but if they don't, then i'll just stick with the 8 mm. thanks guys

I would def. go with the msd coil, i've also found that the msd and moroso wires will flow much better than the accel and therefore are more expensive. You have an internal coil right? in order to go with the blaster 2 coil from msd you will have to get the dust cover to conver it.

aklim i'm guessing you haven't had good luck with msd? i've always had good results. i have the 6a box and the blaster 2, my throttle response is better than ever and it cranks like it's brand new.

Acutally that is what some people call it on Sea-Doo.net because they have MSD stuff and it causes problems.

My choice is Jacobs' Ultra Coil. It has by far the most voltage (65,000v) than any other coil. It also has a variable magnetic coil, which no one else has. That means the output is varied by demand. It's also bulletproof in design. I've used it with both the Jacobs Pro-Street ignition box and currently, the MSD-6AL. I've had mine for over five years with no problems. Last I saw, Jegs lists it for $67.99. When I bought it, it was around $139....

You are extremely unlikely to notice a difference between spark plug wire brands. However, you DO want to get a set that are spiral wound so they don't make noise over your radio or CD player.

I use the Proform 50,000 volt coil and am very pleased with it. And it costs a LOT less than the MSDs, Accels or Jacobs

MSD. Just about ANY coil can deliver a 50,000 volt spark. That isn't important. It only takes about 10,000 volts to jump the plug gap. What matters is AMPS. That determines how long that spark lasts. You want to keep that spark lit as long as possible to ensure combustion gets a good start and begins propogating a good flame front across the combustion chamber.

In the sea of aftermarket coils the MSD is gonna give you more amps than any other bolt-on stock-replacement type coil (not to be compared with race stuff or special coils that are designed to be run with an igniton box).

I was gonna get a new coil because I have been having ignition problems. Think it'd be worth my time to get an msd instead of whatever crap they sell at the napa?

The single biggest improvement you can do to your factory HEI ignintion (older in-cap setups or later divorced-coil style), short of an ignition amplifier box, is to upgrade the coil. It's the "engine" that makes the sparks. Super high tech trick teeny-bopper "flame-thrower" modules do exactly squat (having tried all of them personally). Coil's where it's at.

i went along with the hypertech one... 53k volts over stock's 38k, and it only cost me 60$. the accel supercoil was 59$ at advanced auto and only throws out 48k volts so i said the *** with it and just ordered the hypertech from TR. might as well get the best bang for my buck huh? lol
