I need some insight with a cam for my 305

Thanks for reading. I have an 84 camaro with the 305/ 700R4 trans. and i want to give it some spunk . I have a 600 cfm edelbrock carb and i want to put the biggest cam in the engine as i can without needing a stall converter so any comment would be appreciated.

Grab yourself some headers, hi flow cat, RPM Air Gap intake, and an MSD distributor and wires etc, THEN slip that cam in there and soak in the gains.

all i want help with is to pick a cam that i can put in the 305 that it can handle well. The heads are going to be stock but headers are going on with the new cam. I want a cam that has a rough idle but stall converters are out of my price range so i cant go to big with the cam.

If you dont have supporting mods the cam wont be running to it's full potential. Ebay sells all those items I listed for cheap. CHEAP man! Or woman..

I would say save your money for a 350/bigger motor.

Call a camshaft company and tell them what you have and what your looking for and they will recommend a camshaft for your particular application.

You can deff call the Cam company like RiceKiller said, but I have had personal success with my 305 and was pleases considering it's small size.

With an 84, you dont have to go to the expensive roller cams. I would look for a nice street strip cam. I just did a quick search on summitracing.com and came up with this nice cam.

I belive that the stock valves can take no more then .450 lift, but depending on milage on the springs, they might need to be replaced or the heads need to be rebuilt. The money spent on a set of rebuilt heads could go a long way. Get a set of rebuilt LB9/L69 heads. I dont know if you have an LG4 or L69.
Where are you from? What type of restrictions does your state have on cars?

See, this is one of those things where ya CANT do just the one thing you want: a cam. Like others have said, upgrading to aluminum l98 heads and getting aftermarket rockers/springs would help an A$$ TON

You BETTER NOT put in a new/bigger cam and not change the valve springs...

I wouldnt go for a set of L98 aluminums b/c you can probably find a set of hopped up Vortec heads on ebay for less money (except for buying an intake manifold) and prob. flow better to begin with. Thats where I bought mine for my old 87 and they worked great!

a guy came to my house once and bought a lt1 cam off me for his 305, he used the words "wake up my 305...a bit"

lets face it, the only thing a 305 is good for is using it as a working mock up for your 350.

a 305 is just like any other SBC.. a SMALL BLOCK CHEVY. You can make plenty of power with a 305. Some people want to trick out their car, but dont have the funds for a bigger motor. Take me, for example. I couldn't afford a 5.8 (key word: couldn't)=), so I made a 302 that will run most 6 liter GTO's and Vettes
