I have a ignition question for my IROC

I, as you have probably already read in another post, am having a prob. getting through emission testing in Virginia.

I have not upgraded my stock ignition at all. I have increased my horsepower by almost 200. Can the stock ignition keep up? The inspection guy said that my car being high in the HC ppm and CO% was due to a combustion problem.

Do you all think that an MSD, Accel, or Jacobs ignition will improve this problem?

those being high are an incomplete burn, be it from ignition or a high A/F mixture

a MSD might help, but you may just need to find a tuner with a wideband O2 to get the mix right

yes I think that it would help your emissions and can't hurt the rest of your setup to be actually burning all of the fuel that it is taking in. You will also hurt exhaust components (cat, muffler) by dumping that much unused fuel into it all the time.

If you've added 200 hp, you have obviously put some cash into her. A new ignition setup isn't that much (as long as you aren't going top shelf stuff) and isn't that hard to install.

Once you do that, get a tune and I bet you will pass with flying colors.

Yea the engine was $4K and the trans was $1300. Lots of suspension and engine bolt-ons too added to much more. I did overlooked the ignition system. I remember deciding on the Eccel digital system. Can't remember why I never bought it.

I gotta get the A/F adj. and a few other bugs worked out I see. I think I should be OK soon with passing.

Thanks guys.

You can always add a quart of denatured alcohol to a half a tank or so of gas. You'll find it on the paint thinner aisle at Lowes or Home Depot. Drove my hydrocarbons and CO numbers so low I passed the sniffer here with my setup. First time in a few years, too.

Yea I heard about a cocktail to get thru emission. Thats what my shop told me to do.

Tag problem solved. Since my car was in Spotsylvania County being repaired for the last year DMV allowed me to claim my garage location there for the IROC. Spotsy. County does not require emission. So I'm all good.

I'm still having the car Dyno/Tuned very soon to get it running as efficient as possible.
