Post I finally ordered my AFR195's for my SBC385

It's been two years since I first planned this motor. I've been quietly saving money and buying parts. I'm hoping to have it completed in 2003. The cylinder heads were the last big-ticket item to buy.

The engine is a 385 CID stroker with ceramic coated Lunati racing pistons, six-inch 4340 H-beam rods, an internally balanced, 4340 steel, 3.75 inch stroker crank, and a 1969 388 block that's been line bored, studded, and equipped with windage tray, crank scraper, and other stuff.

The 68cc AFR195's should yeild a 10.6:1 compression ratio. Coupled to this motor is a valve train with titanium retainers, steel roller rockers, and a custom hydraulic roller retrofit cam with around 236 degrees of duration. It also has an AFR hydrarev kit. All up, it should be able to rev to 6800 RPM with no problem. The torque peak should be around 4000 RPM, and peak horsepower should be around 6250 RPM.

We're hoping for high 11's at 120 MPH.

Sounds like a killer package!

What type of induction system will you be using?

just curious, why not solid roller cam? thay are proven to give more power at the exact same cam specs, so why not? w/roller rockers you wont have to relash them if you dont want to. (I have cheap long slot stamped rockers and still havent had to relash mine due to the rockers coming loose)(been driving it all summer off and on)
also, my solid lift flat tappet cam has 236I and 242E dur. @.050 and I only have a 355. just wondering why so conservative? Id think that cam would be really weak for that much cid.
my car revs to 7K no problem w/stock rods/crank you shouldnt have any problem either w/that shortblock. (who knows how long mine will last though going that high)

anyways, sounds like a mean eng. good luck. chris

I originally had picked a 236/242 cam profile and was ready to have it ground. However, I happened upon a deal on Thirdgen.org's list in which a fellow member in Chicago was upgrading to a solid roller for street racing. I bought his whole valvetrain for $500 and it included everything but the valves and rocker arms! It was too good of a deal to pass up.

By the way, I already have a TPIS miniram sitting here, all loaded up with injectors and a 58mm throttle body! That's my induction system. I bought it in the summer of 2000 and have been staring at it longingly ever since!

I've since decided to stick to this cam as it will enable me to drive it around town. In addition, I've heard rumors (unconfirmed) that valve lifts above 0.6 inches can cause premature wear on the springs if the motor sits around for long periods of time. I only do 2000 miles a year these days, and it sits for five months per year during the winter months. Supposedly the compressed springs take a "set" and lose pressure over time.

Good stuff, Dan! She'll be together in no time.

As for your ceramic coated pistons, do you do that in-house now? If so i'll be bringing a set up to M7 for you to work on Possibly an array of small parts to be powdercoated also! Just little stuff that will be winter project included. Take care.

you can help this by loosening the rocker nuts to close all the valves for the storage. its the closed valves that this happens to since the spring is under constant press. for that long of a time. its kinda a pita, but also seals out moisture to keep the eng. fresh and clean inside.

yes Denny, I'm ceramic coating pistons in-house! Hey, I got the ovens, the spray equipment, the blast cabinet, blast media, so why not?

I ceramic coated the piston crowns and sprayed the skirts with dry film lubricant, then cured them. I'll bring an example to M7 for you to look at.

Cheers,
Dan

Good luck! I should have just ordered AFR's before I dumped $500 into my heads.

And Iroc85SS, please trim your signature. We offer FREE webpages here. I would suggest something like:

Car#1 XX@XXmph
Car#2 XX@XX

And you click on the car name for a link.

Thanks!
