HSR and 85-89 L98

ok, so im buying a camaro with the L98 motor in it and im going to put a holley stealth ram system on it, in addition to a cam, heads, shaved deck, rods, pistons, valves, springs, balancing, roller rockers, moroso oil pan with windage tray, and a complete MSD ignition system with programmable computer. my question is, how do the MAF sensor and 9th injector mount on the intake? i dont understand how the intake can fit either 85-89 or 90-92 if they used a different air sensing system. is the 9th injector just not used? thanks for the help guys!!!

First of all its 87-89 (there were no 350s in 85 & 86 unless you are talking vettes) as for the 9th injector you dont use it at all. If you have an 87-88 car you get a new chip that no longer requires the 9th injector.

Re: HSR and 85-89 L98

well he didn't specify which year camaro he is buying. i swapped my 86 TA to a HSR. you will still use the MAF. the 9th injector goes bye-bye because 1) the intake has no provisions and 2) neither do the HSR fuel rails. go to www.stealthram.com for all your questions and answers. there are plenty of us there to help you out.

I burned a new chip for my friends 86 Z28 with a 355 and HSR. I used an 89 Bin File for the car.

The .bin file is the information that gets programmed onto a blank chip.

Re: HSR and 85-89 L98

using the 1989 chip, or .bin if you do prom work, will delete the 9th injector and still keep MAF. the 9th injector is used for cold start up. without it and using the 85-88 chip, you will have a little hard starting in the morning. the 89 chip will take care of this. it will use the 8 injectors to add more fuel at cold start up. i used the 1987 chip because for me it was somewhat easier to use for tuning. i did prom work myself. i lived with the hard start in the cold mornings here in florida.

If you use an 89 memcal and your car doesn't have vats, your car won't start. VATS needs to be turned off in the memcal.

Even if you check the stock system out for max potential, you will have to do computer work. Your options are:

1. Get some off the shelf unit that they swear will work for you.
2. Get someone like Lingenfelter's or HiTech Motorsport to tune it on a dyno and the chip will be truely custom.
3. Get someone like www.fasterproms.com to burn you a chip to your specs and then send them readings which they use to fine tune your EPROM.

The difference between 2 and 3 is the dyno they use. In #2, they use an actual dyno and in #3 they use the street as your dyno. Of course, when I brought mine to LPE when John was alive, he prefered to use the street as his dyno and lit up the tires a few times because, as he said to me when I asked why he did it, "I just wanted to do that"

Also if you have the "coil in cap" HEI distributor, you will have to change it. My new 91 Vette will have to be changed and I had to get wiring diagrams to see what each wire was for. There are 4 wires and you would have to cut the part off from the weatherpak connector to the distributor and solder that end to the end of the 4 wire weatherpak connector that goes into the distributor.

I like that. Have you found a plenum or other solution for the HSR/Vette hood problem yet?

Re: HSR and 85-89 L98

stealthram.com didnt say anything about changing the prom on the expense list. so i absolutely have to have a custom computer either programmed from an off the shelf or burned for my car. that just sucks really really bad. did all you guys do this?

Re: HSR and 85-89 L98

You don't have to have a custom prom for the car to run. You just won't see the full benefits of the stealth ram without a custom chip. Also, as mentioned before, cold start situations may be a little tough without the 9th injector.
