How reliable is your third gen?

How often do you guys have a problem with your car? Personally, my car hasn't given me any problems that have actually left me stranded or anything (knock on wood).

-Rippin

EDIT: Oh yeah, she has 138,5XX miles.

massive vibration coming out of the engine at hi rpms and as you drive and everything warms up it gets worse.

When I drove mine everyday there was always something wrong with it. My engine bay was a plethera of odd noises that shouldnt have been there. Just little crap mostly.

yeah it becomes undriveable after a couple minutes, is a really massive vibration, and is usually not appreciated by passengers in the car it sounds really bad.

Actually I am a lucky guy because my uncle owns his own business and when he found out I was interested in Camaros he told me about this 86 his son was goin to build up but instead got a monte carlo (runs 11's)...I came down and it was already in showroom condition , the engine wasn't touched at all...this is what I got...PERFECT BODY, EXCELLENT INTERIOR, POWER EVERYTHING, NEW RADIATOR, NEW TIRES, NEW BRAKES, FOR A GRAND TOTAL OF $1500 BUCKS.....car has never given me problems except for the fuel pump...very happy with the purchase

I bought an '88 for a grand...60K clean inside....visually fun to look at...especially when you "jaz" it up.....I'm sure it will last and last...and believe me, the lil 2.8 V6 puts me baack in the seat when I slam it. It "looks" like a muscle, but it's just a pretty lil "curvy calf"....spend the money you save and buy a lil speedboat to haul around.

I've had mine since 96 and have had lots of small problems or annoyances. It is a 19 year old car with just under 200K miles so what do you expect? Though most were created by me and my quest for more performance. Some aftermarket parts just don't work well with other aftermarket parts

NEVER had any kind of problem where the car wouldn't start or drive. Never had to limp home. Never left me stranded. Everytime something goes wrong I get a warning...

I'm constantly waiting for something else to break on my car

I can't count how many times I've kicked myself for not leaving the damn thing stock..... once you start playing around with things and start making power, you break things

I've been through 2 motors, 4 trannies, and I'll be installing rear end #3 this week. those are just the major things that have gone on me, I've been stranded a few times for little stuff like fusible links and what not

I love my car, no doubt about that...... but its anything but reliable

I bought my 84 and 2 weeks later the engine grenaded in it, (the oil pick up tube broke.). I rebuilt the engine, need to replace the transmission. I have replaced my about 4 times. I have one of those cars that has the broken bug that wanders around (once one thing is fixed something else is broken). Now i have to worry about emissions.

heh if my engine does turn out to need a rebuild i want to put in a 383 stroker that pushes 600 hp at the crank n/a whos power band is between 2000-6500 heh and i have to pass ontario emissions standards.....have yet to figure out how im going to pull that off

I have never had any really major problems with my '88 Z,sure a few minnor ones and a couple of times in the shop on warrenty work, but she has never stranded me or made me late, she has always gotten me home safely.(knock on wood) Of course she only has alittle over 80k on the clock that might be part of it. lol!

Back when I didn't know anything about mechanic work I swapped the heads on my 305. It lasted about 6 months before the head gasket gave (entirely my fault though.....didn't check the used heads for straightness.) When I built the 355 the old 140,000 mile tranny didn't hold up (imagine that) so I had to replace it. Once I got stranded because my radiator was cracked and all the coolant leaked out and she overheated...blew the upper hose right off the radiator (this is after I built the 355 but before I swapped in the 6-speed.) I knew it was leaking but couldn't afford to fix it. I had to have it towed to my Dad's house and borrow money from him for a new radiator.

So yeah in 6 years I've had 3 major problems and 2 of them were entirely my fault. That's not bad for a thoroughly modified toy.

Of course that's not counting little things like alternators and loose wires and interesting suspension noises.....I get those all the time but they never leave me stranded. I just drive her home and take my truck to the parts store.
