how much can a 700R4 handle?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
i plan on running mid 12's sooner or later with my 350 tpi. i was wondering if the stock 700R4 can handle this or not? if not, what kind of work needs to be done so it can handle it? or is it best to just get a new tranny?

A stock 700r4 can handle 300 to 350 hp or so. A 12 second capable 3rd gen would definitely require a well bolstered tranny to cope with it.

Go here and post this same question: http://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/foru...?s=&forumid=19

These folks are truly helpful and knowledgeable. A few build just the tranny you want, too. Ask for Dana, aka Pro Built

Let me put it to you another way. I had GM rebuild my tranny under warranty. A couple of months later, I stuffed an LPE 383 into the car. 6 months of babying it and the tranny died. Had www.rosslertrans.com which was a company LPE recommended rebuild it and it lasted 3.5 years with me beating on it.

I ordered all the parts to build my trans from the guys who sell the mega raptor 700r trans. I had a guy local put it together for me. My motor is making around 450 to 475 horse and I have sprayed it with 150 shot and so far the trans has held up well. Check the web site out they have some really good looking parts for the 700r.

I second Dana at Pro-Built Automatics.

I have one and I love it. Absolutely no complaints...from customer service to build quality.

Yes I'll plug Pro Built also. Mine has been awesome for a liuttle under a year now. roughly 3000 miles of driving, 40 passes, 20 passes on the bottle running a best of 12.80. Dana told me he's confident that it'll hold in the 625hp/600lb-ft range I think but don't quote me.

I had one in a 77 Z28 that I built. Ran 12.30's on the motor. Anyway, I ended up breaking the transmission like three times before I got rid of it. First time I was getting on the express way with a mustang way way waayyy behind me. I cracked a planetary gear and stripped all the teeth off of 4th gear. Woops. Second time I broke it, I was at the track and I ended up breaking the input shaft. The third time was just after it was fixed and supposedly unbreakable, three days later it was broke. I ended up putting a th400 behind it and never had another problem, except for crappy fuel mileage. Kinda wish I still had the car, it was great in the winter, but summer time sucked cause it didn't have AC.

I'm building my own with a TCI Master Racing kit, a Vette style power servo, and am checking into some beefed up hardened parts like sprag and shafts etc...I've rebuilt several, most just plain rebuilds, but mine I'm taking really seriously..and taking my time.(at least 'til Spring.. )
I'm hoping to be over 400hp...
