How I ran 14.5 in a STOCK 89...

Last time, about a year ago, I ran at Sacramento Raceway and got a 14.88 @ 96 mph with no weight reduction.

Enter last Wednesday. Last Wed Night Drag at Sac. I removed the seats (left the drivers) the rear carpet, the jack, spare tire, etc. Ran a more decent 14.7. Removed my airfilters and opened my cutout and ran a 14.544 @ 95.x mph. Not to bad for a stock L98. I believe that is LT1 territory right?

Excuse time. I had basically NO traction, don't run Kumho tires if you're dragging. Althought at $85 a piece they ARE cheap... But I was getting way worse 60' times (2.1 best vs 2.0 average,) the first time I went sideways into second and almost went into the other lane.

Fast times rule.

Hey bro, We should get together sometime. I go to sac all the time, but because of work I missed the last wed night drags. Anyway, it would be nice to see another 3rd gen around here. There are a few of us, but we are always looking for fresh faces!

Good job!

You're closing in on LT1 territory, I'd say you will probably be running right beside stock LT1's, depending on elevation of your track, etc.

Get a cutout, homemade ram air, and maybe a chip and you should be running even quicker, definite 13-second potential with minimal effort. A converter would help too, if you're running an auto. Good luck!

If you are modifying the car thhen it is not stock anymore, maybe you mean to say a bolt-on L98. Because stock atleast in my mind is how it came off the assembly line.

...Not sure I understand your posts there, AutoRoc. Dude was just posting his times, according to his sig, has very few if any so-called mods. Doesn't have any of the usual TPI ones, save for filters and a muffler. I doubt either one gave him much of a reduction in ET, maybe a tenth or so if he's lucky.

I was just hinting that his title maybe should have read "How I ran 14.5 with only weight reduction, some free mods and a cutout"

And of course I'm jealous because his car actually runs a good number like it should A lot of guys have trouble getting INTO the 14's alone!

Unhappy Ooops!

Ok, ok, what I meant was, 14.5 on a stock 89 L98 engine.

I'm curious how fast I can get without opening the engine. Next on my list is traction, ram air, torque converter lockup and shift kit, and maybe !cat although my fiance doesn't want me going to jail for 10 years. Anyone have an opinion on shift kits?

And hey Stanghunter, I live like 4 hours north of Sac so I get there maybe twice a year, but next season maybe we can meet up, although I'm hopeing Reno Raceway will be finished by then. (2 hour drive instead.) Sacramento has nicer elevation though.

Traction and a good torque converter will get you WELL into the 13 second zone. A set of Mickey Thompson Et Streets size: 26" tall, 10.5" or 11.5" wide for your stock 16X8" rims will hook like crazy and a Precision Industries or Yank torque converter will probably be the biggest bang for the buck. Most TPI people here do best with 2400-2600 rpm versions.

As far as shift kits go, i think the group choice would be Trans-Go. I had their kit in my last IROC-Z. Gear Shifts were brutal at full throttle But everyday crusing around it was firm but very tollerable(ie: it didn't chirp the tires on EVERY shift like other kits i've seen)

Not a bad time for the mods.
Denny what you been doing to the vert. You are running faster than me when I am on the motor. I picked up a NOS kit but haven't installed it yet. i am hoping for the high 11.
Then i will have to do something else to try and keep up with Jeff.

Chris,
Under that Holley 600 carb I put a Nitrous Express Stage 6 Plate. I converted the LT1 wet kit I had to work with that plate at 9 PSI of fuel pressure and 1000PSI bottle pressure. On the 100 shot jets it ran 13.30's It's been running the 150 jets for a month or so. I out 2 bottles through it and it's looking good! Plugs look beautiful, no piston melting...Rich=safe

I am still looking for more 12 second cars to play with so I can see how deep it is IN the 12's If you are game, let me know and I'll put street insurance back on it for a day or two!! It got storage insurance yesterday... I tried to get Dave Deel to run me with his heads/cam LS1 trans am but he never has time His car traps roughly 113-114 and I think I can beat him later man!
