Dude you better wake up and smell the coffee. If you want to go fast it is going to cost more than what you are thinking. My car will pig the speedo and that don't come cheap. A 350 HP Ram Jet is $4500.00. That will give you about 275 or 280 RWHP. A carb ZZ4 or 5 is about $3500.00.
Now I have a LPE engine. I got the block free. I still have over $6000.00 in parts and I am sure I missed something. Speed cost and the faster you want to go the more it cost.
Now to the girl friend. If she is telling you what to do now what do you think she is going to do when you are married. You are 19 years old and have not lived yet. I am not ******* you because I have been there. Your marriage will never work from what you have stated. She sounds very selfish wanting a $8000.00 truck and wanting you to do without. If you don't get her under control she will be telling you when to **** and how much. When my wife and I married I had 5 cars 4 of them muscle cars. I sold 2 of them to keep the peace and kept 3. My wife will bitch at times about me spending money on my cars and I will tell her. When she married me she knew what she was getting into and if she doesn't like it she knows were the door is at. Don't get me wrong. I am good to my wife and kids. I worked 12 to 15 hours a day and they needed for nothing. But she knows if I want something for my cars or if I want a new car I will get it and she will live with it.
You are 19 and should live a little before you settle down. I marries when I was 32 years old. I traveled all over the country and several other countrys. I have been with many different women over the years and can tell you first hand that it take alot of searching to find one you will stay with for life. I had lived with several different women for 2 to 3 years each. After living with them 6 months or so the honeymoon is over. Again I wish you luck but would never tell anyone to get married at 19 for any reason. That is just my .02

Ah, hee hee, no no, see, my girlfriend doesn't 'not' like F-bodies, she just hates this one f-body, and for good reason, every known flaw in your general 3rd gen f-body is on this car, cracked gas tank neck, shacky windows, (nomatter what I do) flaky paint, and so on. See, why she doesn't want me to spend money on it was because the original idea was to buy this as a temp car, and then get another 91 firebird (god they are hot car, mad chick magnets, not that I need more stress/women in my life ) but over time I realised that I will never find a decent 91/92 firebird with a v8 and t-tops, it wont happen, so I am staying with this car, and thats what she hates given, she is being abit stuborn, but shes only like that because she really has a problem with this car, I could buy another 86 camaro, and she would like it, just she hates this car can't say it enough, she hates the car

See, I can't buy it all at once, you know what I mean? I'm buying the basic crate motor, nothing fancy, carb'd and such, and everything else will be the same thing, just basic new parts, minus the tranny, I want a strong tranny so I don't have to worry about it breaking, Then over time I'm going to add to it, thats what I'm doing with the 305 in my car now, as the parts break (as they do... often, which is why my gf hates it) I replace them with quality parts, so when I do get a new engine, I'll just have to do afew things to the 305 to have a perfectly rebuilt engine (depending on what you think "rebuilt" is ) so 20 years down the road when there isn't 9000 3rd gen camaros on the road, and someone wants a numbers matching car (depending again on how strick you are about it) then my car will be 'cool'.

Then with the 350 I will simply add things as I can, I want to stay with a carb, as that is what I was raised with, and I feel comfortable with them, I don't know how to tune them to well, but I am better with them then efi and such.

I wasn't asking "how much would it cost to be so fast I can hang my hands out the windows and fly into space" I was asking, what all do you think I could do with my little budget that I have right now, I'm not looking for to much, maybe 375 to 400 (the crate comes as 350 hp) and probably about 275 rwhp (not sure on the math, just guessing) you know, nothing big right now, as I like to take things slowly, and I hate buying stuff already made, I"m only buying the crate so I can throw it in and go, but I would rather build the horsepower on it myself, instead of just buying it from someone like that.

Plus both my grandfathers are mechanics (ones an upolsterer, sorry for the spelling ) so I can get parts cheap, and as many of you have said, I have nothing but time for my car or was that "Don't do it, shes evil, you have a full life ahead of you"

**laughs** Ah, but I read what I have written, she does sound evil she just really wants a wrangler, I sorta want one too, havent driven one in almost 4 years.

But see, I just want to know what you all think I 'Can' do within my budget, I know speed = money nomatter how you look at it, but the way I see it is like this, I can pay someone to make me a powerful engine that would smoke anyone else, and just have it, no real pride at all about it, or I could do it myself, and spend the countless hours cussing, and throwing tools, and when I'm done, even if its slower then the 305 I have in there now, atleast I did it myself, and thats worth it.

This car is going to be the "Ididit" car for me, everything from the interior, to the paint, I'm doing everything as solo as I can, minus advice, which is why I am here

See, then when I'm done, I will know every little thing about my car, which is priceless


So what all could I do within my budget thats what I should have said but it was a 2 question question part 1 was that, but part 2 was this: How powerful CAN you make a 305-350 (with limitless money, I also have godmode cheats ) I figure there is a point where a 305-350 just wont hold up, and will simply blow something up, thats what the 2nd part of my question is.

1) what can I do within my budget, as I've never had this much money, and I've never done any of this, so I need help.

2) How powerful can a 305-350 be before it reaches its breaking point? (without power adders, just all motor)


Hee hee, as for the girlfriend, shes a sweetheart, she just doesn't understand cars, as I don't understand why she needs 20 shoes in comparison to my 1 pair of doc martins
(Minus the fact that docs last for years, and regular shoes last no more then acouple months)

to say you will never find another cherry 91-92 firebird with T-s is foolish.I know of the nicest example for sale up in Michigan right now.He is in the MI section under 91 bird 305.He has a post up right now he also has a a MI video with the car in it if you would like to see it.It is the nicest 3rd gen Firebird I have seen.It is real clean.The guys name is Eric he's real nice and will talk to you about it if you choose.You should check it out.They are out there. I am sure Chris Ja will back me up on this too.You have seen Erics car hav'nt ya Chris??

If you want a manual get a six speed, there much stronger than the T-5's besides you will eat through the t-5.. It's a sorry trans.. friend had one in his 88 mustang t-top blew through two of them.. T-56 is the way to go.. I wanted to go fast.. So I spent

$1400 700R-4 with all bells and whistles 2500stall
$2100 86 Iroc Camaro
$300 10point roll Cage and sub frames
$250 97 Rear with Disc
$8500 in the motor
$1800 in the Gear Vendors OD
$1300 Paint
$600 Tenzo Racing Seats
$1300 in Suspension(lca, brackets, trq arm, shocks, struts, springs, k-member)
$600 FiberGlass parts (fenders, hood)

$18,150 so far.. And she isn't even together yet.. Plus the other Misc. stuff I didn't add..

Going fast costs money.. Do it right the first time!! I just want to blow around town.. and rev to the sky and see some 9's or some 10's click off.. and some people get teeed off..

And lots of time and Labor.. I've gone through two girlfriends with this restoration.. Some Doubted, others loved to watch me work on it.. I rather spend my time with both my car and my girl.. It's great to have a girl that wants the same.. Ya know to spend time with you and your car...

Don't ask how fast. Ask yourself how much money you have. Lingenfelter took it up to Bonneville and achieved or achieved close to 300mph

 

Eric has a very nice TA for sale. It is one of the cleanest you are going to find. Check it out for sure. It also has alot of mods on it. Very very nice car. if you read the post on the third gen board some of the guys are giving him a hard time about the cars performance. These guys all drive cars high 12.9 or faster. It is a very very nice car as you can see if you go to his web page.

God I want your car, the smog removal will pose a problem, as I'm in Cali, but I know some people who will smog it for me

But I when I get my money, if your car is still there (which I doubt it will, as thats a damn nice firebird) then I will look into it again as firebirds in general, especially the 91/92 ones everyone likes, even my evil "wishshewasdead" grandmother likes firebirds

I don't know much about your situation, but once you buy a woman a car she expects you to buy her everything else. My wife used to work 40 hrs a week, then i bought her a new car 2001 Z24 Cavalier leftover. She steadily lessened her hours since then. Good Luck though, as far as the Camaro goes, a Local transmission shop can rebuild your T-5 to hold a decent amount of horsepower. How Much? you say, depends on how they do things, my last T-5 held up nicely to the ZZ4 crate motor.
