How do I adjust that 700R4 cable that ataches to the throttle?
WHen I switched from TPI to carb the throttle is in a different place so that cable is out of adjustment and I really dont know how to do it or what it should look like properly adjusted (how much slack it should have etc...) I played with it some and got the tranny so it was driveable without annoying me with eratic shifts but its still not right. I have to rev it up high to get it to shift to the next gear and when it does shift it kicks down easily if you give it any gas at all, and that starts the whole cycle of having to rev the hell out of it again. Im gonna call a tranny place tommorow I dont suppose they can charge too much to adjust a little cable but I thought I would see if you guys knew something I didnt.
The tv cable adjustment is critical. When my nephew changed from the qjet to a holley on his 87 z28, he mickey moused the original bracket to wok with the holley and promptly burned up the tranny. After the tranny was rebuilt, he found the proper bracket for a holley. Stop driving it till you get the right parts.
Here is a decent description of the adjust procedure:

Depress the D tab and pull the cable towards the carb. Get in the car, remove the floormat if not already done and nail the gas a couple of times - engine not running. You will hear it ratcheting. If you follow the method that tells you to open the throttle by hand on the carb it will NOT work properly.
Is your new bracket farther from the throttle linkage than your old bracket? Because it definitely sounds like the TV cable is too tight. It's self adjusting, but it will only adjust so far and if the bracket is too far back it will adjust all the way out and still be too tight.

The braket is also adjustable I can slide it forward. Initally the cable was way to loose so I turned the braket around and made it tighter and the tranny shifted better than when it was too loose but still not well. Ok well Im gonna go out and try to adjust it now Ill tell you guys how it goes later.

Maybe Im just a wiener but I played with it for 15 minutes I cant get that button to push down for anything, is there a truck to it or do you just push it down?
It's old. They get sticky. Push harder. I usually use a screwdriver.
When you get it down, make sure you slide the snout ALL the way back into the housing, and it does seem to work better if you press the gas pedal instead of turning the throttle linkage.

The safest and best way that I know of is to attach a pressure gauge to the pressure port on the tranny. This is on the driver side of the tranny about in the middle of the housing, and should be the only plug there, I think that it is 3/8 pipe thread. It sounds tough but it isn't and only takes a few minutes. You need a pressure gauge that goes to 300psi and enough hose to bring it up under the hood by the carb. Use a GM service manual or a Chiltons manual and they have the procedures for setting the pressure, this is more than likely how your old tranny guy set it and is the most accurate. I roasted a new tranny because I was about 5-6 psi off on my idle setting. I am also pushing over 500 lb-ft of torque also so it is very critical that my pressure is right. At idle my pressure is 91psi, this is with the car warmed up and running fairly smooth at idle. Also if you have to much pressure at idle you can over-work the pump in the tranny and drastically shorten the life of your trannys pump. It sounds like alot of work but it really isn't and you don't have to pull the tranny out to hook up the line to the pressure port, just jack up your car and put some jack-stands down and it is pretty easy to get to. The results are a great and firm shifting tranny and years of trouble free operation.
I've always opened the throttle by hand to W.O.T. after resetting the housing end and it's worked perfectly many times. If the cable moves choppy, not smoothly the notches may be too worn to get a correct adjustment and the cable may need replacing. That's why I watch it carefully as I adjust it also making sure it doesn't jump too far and holds the adjustment without slipping back a notch or two.
deathroc, you need a bracket to adapt the throttle linkage to the holley. the part is in the pic about 2/3's down that site listed earlier. it should be like $20 or so. it will corect the geometry in the linkage so you can adj. it properly.
