Historic car?
Historic car?
hey guys i have an 83 z28, and i was wondering if it is considered a historic car, and if it is does that mean it may be exempt from some emission rules. I live in new jersey if that helps at all
According to the EPA, no civilian vehicles built after '75 or '76 are exempt from emissions. The way I understand the rules... the year model of the vehicle determines the classification of its emmission limits. So to say, if you own a 1983 Camaro, no matter which engine, transmission, exhaust...etc you have installed, it all has to still pass emmissions tests and limits for that particular vehicle. Where you can really bend the rules is to purchase a vehicle built before the '75-76 year model which is originally exempt from emmissions and modify it to your pleasure.
I'm not completely familiar with California laws, but I assume they have much stricter control over even old/classic vehicles built before '75.
According to most insurance companies, if a vehicle is over fifteen (15) years old, it is considered a classic/collector vehicle.

It really depends on the state. In PA there are areas that do not require emssions testing and i have known people who have taken the equipment off. Also if you drive under 5,000 miles a year in PA on a certain car you can be except from the emissions test.
