Higher Octane Worth It?
Higher Octane Worth It?
You can read my car specs in my sig block, but I have been wondering: would higher octane fuel give me more power or be worth the extra coinage with my old carbed LG4? Or at 13mpg, am I just burning extra cash?
Re: Higher Octane Worth It?
the octane of fuel relates to the stability of the fuel under presure meanding that high compression motors need a higher octain more octain does not mean more hp nor does a lower octain mean crapy fuel. i would say run it on the octain the engine was ment to run on unless you change the compression.
Re: Higher Octane Worth It?
Keep running what you are running. 87 will be fine.
Basically, a higher number octane (92) is harder to combust, which is why you would use it in a high compression (10:1+) engine. When fuel is compressed more, it is easier to combust...so easy, that using a low octane in a high compression engine will combust without spark, hence, why you need a fuel that is harder to combust. If anything, running a higher octane while not needed can actually do more harm than good. Save the $$ and stick with 87 or 89.

Nice dogs dude. Do they cruise in the Z? I'm in Stafford. See ya on the streets. My family lives across from Tacketts mill off Old bridge. Who painted your car. It looks smooth. I gotta get mine done next year? I spent $7200 so far this year on my car between engine and trans.

Re: Higher Octane Worth It?
Glad you like the hounds! I live down across from Woodbridge HS and Lake Ridge Middle School. I haven't had them in the Z yet, they ride in the CR-V.
I bought the car up in PA from a guy who rebuilds cars for a living. He specializes in Camaros because he has always loved them, but does Monte's, S-10s, and Vettes. He did the engine rebuild at the shop he works at and had the paint and decals done by the paint shop he works with on a regular basis.
The car is solid, but has had some issues. I spent $3500 on it (going rate for the area and the age), $1400 on getting it emissions worthy (goddamn it!), $500 on tires, $400 on a stereo, and $1700 on a tranny rebuild and improvement.
Kinda makes me cry when I total that up!!! Of course, I could've spent all that on a new import... but who wants to do that??
