Heres a stupid question regarding 4th gen Rearend

I have some guy selling a rearend which came off his 99' LS1,6speed camaro. From what he emailed me it has 3.42 posi 28 axle rear. The only disadvantage is that there is no backplates or brakes on either side. I know the LT1 4th gen rears bolt on to 3rd gens, but will this 99 LS1 rear fit into my 92 camaro RS??? Could i install the Backplates and Drums from my 92 RS into the 99' Rear for the mean time????? any info or tips is appreciated thanx guys

It's the same as the LT1 rear. The only time is the diff is wider than a 3rd gen so your 3rd gen rims will stick out.

I just finished that same swap myself. Everything bolts right up, no problems except the brakes. You will need a set of 93 or later rear disc brakes. The drums you have might fit, but it will require more fabrication than you would be willing to attempt.

I believe the flange that the backplate bolts to is different, but I'm not sure. Take a good close look before you buy.

The flange that's welded onto your stock 3rd gen drum axle is very different from any other design. It will not work with later disc setups. You can modify it however. But like I said, that is not a route that you want to go (unless you have an acetylene torch and welder handy). You'd be better off dropping another $100-$150 or so for a 93+ rear disc setup. Or, if you have no money, you could put a 93-96 drum setup on. You can find them all the time at junkyards (people usually only take the disc setups) real cheap!

Your stock flange looks like this

You would have to cut this off

And then weld that piece to the top of the axle flange on the 4th gen rear.

A LOT of unnecessary work for some $hitty drum brakes
