Angry Help, my car won't start.

I've got a 92 RS 305 TBI auto.

I drove it to work and it seemed to run fine.

Later, when I went to lunch, the thing wouldn't start. It acts like it wants to, but just won't kick over.

I check for fuel, fire, and the battery is fine. I actually seem to be getting too much fuel.

So, its not the fuel pump or relay, and the car has all new plugs and wires.

Where do i go from here.

Thanks

First thing I would do is put some gas it it. I know it sounds stupid but you never know when the Chevy gauge could go very crazy or get stuck in the 1/4 position when its empty.

Thanks for the thought, but I just filled up the day before. Got plenty of gas.

Re: Help, my car won't start.

It might be the starter if it has battery power gas and still will not crank over. Not for sure but maybe.

Re: Help, my car won't start.

In my situation, my car would start sometimes and then other times it wouldnt. I later found out it was due to a crack in my Ypipe breathing hot air onto the starter, causing it to seize up. When I turned the key, absolutely nothing at all would happen, no crank nothing.

Sounds like a different scenerio for you. What you Could do is jack the car up and put stands under it, take off the flywheel cover, and try to start it while at the same time have a friend check underneath and see if the gear in the starter is popping out and engaging with the flywheel and turning it. If that is working then it isnt your starter. I dont know what else it could be, but at least you can eliminate one factor, unless it IS the starter that is plaguing you.

If it DOES turn out to be a starter, you can get one for 15$ at Autozone if you turn your old one into them. A cheap fix you can easilly do yourself...bolts right in. Some shimming may be needed but it comes with all those parts and its not hard at all. Good luck to you.

I have had a starter get stuck on the flywheel. Also try taping on the starter with a hammer or something.

Re: Help, my car won't start.

I am not to familar with TBI, but if it is cranking over, getting spark, and smells like a lot of gas, maybe the injectors are getting stuck open and flooding the engine.

you could try to unplug the injectors connectors and use starting fluid to see if it will fire up.

Re: Help, my car won't start.

I pulled the ECM fuse and it started for about five seconds, ran really rough and died again.

I also tried the starter fluid thing and it might have helped a little.

Re: Help, my car won't start.

I helped a guy with that, his was doing the exact same thing, and it ended up being the ECT(engine coolant temp) sensor

if you have access to a scanner, look and the engine temp reading, bad is pegged really low(-29?), wiggle the ECT connector as well while observing

if you don't have access to a scanner
unplug both injectors and see if it starts(from fuel in the intake)

if it does, you most likely need the ECT or connector(I do both.....)

How about "Bad gas", water in the tank?
What did the plugs look like?
Try a few bottles of "Dry Gas"?

Module, or timing?
Remove ignition module and have it tested.

Re: Help, my car won't start.

The plot thickens....

After a couple of days of trying to trouble-shoot this problem, a new twist has developed.

Over the last few days, its been real damn cold. 5-25 degrees F, and the car just won't start no matter what.

Today, I go out and it close to 60 and it fires right up. Running just rough as hell, but drivable none the less.

Does anyone have a clue as to what is going on??

Also, thanks to everyone for the suggestions.

Re: Help, my car won't start.

Might be possible if there is any water in the tank that your fuel lines are freezing...doubtful but still a possibility. However if you are running rough when it is warm anyhow, it's not likely. Try and get those scan results though.

Re: Help, my car won't start.

I don't have a scanner. All I can do is run a jumper and check the ECM codes, which I did. Nothing is coming up.

At least I was able to drive it home. It ran really rough and smoked really bad when I got on the gas.

I'm starting to think I do have some watered down or bad gas.
