Help me build.
Help me build.
Im still undecided on which route to take in building a new motor. Im wanting to build a street/strip car. I guess high 11's or low 12's is what Im aiming for, Gas milage is not much of an issue, this will be my daily driver for a lil while after I finish it just until I can get a truck. Now, with that being said, let's get into it.
I have a O10 350 4 bolt main block that my dad pulled out of an old bus..He says it's a strong block....I dunno anything about it. I also have a billit steel crank. I kinda want to make this a Stealth Ram 396.Would that work out alright? What kind of heads would go good w/ the Stealth Ram? What is involved in boreing it to a 396? Does that change the stroke? Can I use the billit crank or do I need another one? Nitrous is an option, so if it will save me to go that route, I will gladly, but I want it setup right to go that route as well. I am really clueless, this is my first motor to build, so please no flames. I dont have a fortune to spend..probably roughly $3,500-$4,000 and I'd like to have some of that left over to work on other parts of the car, but if not, paint, carpet and miscellanous(sp) things can wait.

If you want to make a 396 that steel crank you have is useles to you. But if its a real steel crank for a 350 in good condition you should be able to get a little cash out of it. A 396 is a .030 bore block with a stroke of around 3.82 (someone will chime in with exact stroke sooner or later) You will have to have a machine shop prep your block, rods and maybe oil pan for a stroker motor. And you will have to ues a small base circle camshaft. Problem with the 396 is they dont make it in cast crank so you have to buy a forged one and they arent cheap at all.
that 010 block is made from a couple different types of metals, such as nickel and iron (i think thats right)..my friends dad has 1 in his garage im gonna steal 1 day (haha). i would go w/ more of a 383 or 385 stroker (lots of people have them but they run damn good from what ive heard). that motor,a good set of vortec heads, decent cam,and the intake u want should be well w/in your financial goal. if u want to run nitrous,u might want to buy forged pistons and rods and things like that, expensive yes,but wont break as much **** when u flip that switch.
hope this helps

Yea I have one too. Look under the timing chain cover it should have a couple numbers. Mines 1% nickel 2%tin or vice versa I cant recall. I think Im gonna opt to use a 400 though. Bigger bore and stroke capabilities.
