ok
-take off shift ****(unsrew if a 5spd and take off clip if a auto)
-remove shifter plate.
-remove sterio plate
-remove sterio
-and remove 2 side screws close to the heater controls that hold the upperpart of the console onto the lower part.
-remove the screws holding the heater controls to the lower console
-remove the two bolts in your glove box
-pull your ebrake up as far as it goes and unsrew the little screw in the side of it and slide the handle off
-now you should beable to lift off your upper console and carefully work it off this may require some manuvering and prying (dont forget to unclip any switch harnesses like p/w and trunk)

-now youll see 2 more bolts under where the glove box was remove those.
-then youll see a middle crossbrace remove the bolt from that (its a bit back from the shifter
-then under the dash on each side going up where the dash meets the top of the console youll see on each side theres a screw holding it to the dash remove those.
then i thing your done it comes right out.
dont worry i think you only need like 2 size sockets maybe 3.

also i removed the upper console in my tech artical (has pics) when i did my shifter install....so if you go there youll see most of the console coming apart. I even outlined were the screws were.

Ahhhh Haaaaa after looking at your page on the shifter install i can finally stop myself from going crazy.

i installed a hurst shifter on my 85 z28 t5. everything was ok till i tried to install the new lower shift boot i bought. it would not fit right.

so after seeing how you cut it to fit i think i just might be going to do that right now lol.
