Re: help figuring this out

Don't know about the 305/350 but "ASC" are the guys that did the top. They weren't engine guys, but that doesn't mean someone else didn't change it. That's the problem with used cars, you don't know what's been done. Get the numbers off the block. That will tell you if it's a 350 or not.
Oh, and if this was some kind of "official special edition" there would be paperwork with it and the previous owners would have been asking ridiculous amounts for it.

Asking here would be a start.
There are books available also, Camaro ID Numbers 1967-1993, ISBN1-880524-15-5 is a nice book to own.

well if the 8th digit on the vin is f its a 305tpi, or if its a 8 its a 350tpi. Well that just means what it left with from the factory.

Re: help figuring this out

I have the, "Camaro white book", and if you dont have one I suggest you get one off e-bay. It has all info on 67-02 Camaro's including options, vin codes, production #'s, colors, engine codes, I mean you name it. Anyway it says in '88 all convertible IROC's were made as hardtops then sent to ASC to have it removed. Also all cars with the optional LB9 (305 TPI) motor got 145MPH speedometer instead of the 115MPH one. Only 3,761 conv. were made in '88. Really rare cars. I have had three 305TPI T-top cars with rear disc brakes and that option has to have the limited slip diff. so that's not an indicator of a 350. The 305 and 350 TPI are identical just by looks. When you open the hood you'll need to look up and left under the hood to see where it tells it's a 5.0liter. Its the emmission sticker. I would do anything to have a conv. Have fun with it and never sell it. Oh yea. The IROC convertible weighs and has the same weight distribution as a hard top because of getting rid of the heavy rear hatch. Now here is something in the book that is cool. It says that in '87 convertibles could not be ordered with the B2L 350TPI. However, ASC did build convertibles for customer-owned Camaros and some were '87 350's. So if you took a 350 car to ASC it would be a factory convertible but you just couldn't call it that.

The White book (ISBN 0-7603-1879-4) is good to have also, but that only tells you what came from the factory. If someone changed something on the car you can figure out what you have in the car by checking the numbers,ie. is that the stock trans, engine, rearend etc.. Both are handy books and work well with one-another.

Re: help figuring this out

now this rule is out of someone's changed the ballancer, but all 305's i've seen have an almost 2.5" thick harmonic ballancer. 350's are thinner.

I have a friend with a 89 TA, its was a Throttle Body Injected, 305, 5 speed, 373 posi from the factory.

GM did all kinds of weird combos.

Re: help figuring this out

The VIN wouldn't tell you what it IS, only what it was. Get the SN off the BLOCK and check. http://www.mortec.com/
