help 3rd gen guys!!!
help 3rd gen guys!!!
i need help guys, i am starting from scratch with an 87 iroc, i am taking the 305 out and would like to get in 10's. what do i have to do, bare with me, i am sort of new at racing but i know enough to do it myself. any help would be really great.
Re: help 3rd gen guys!!!
What is the $$ amount you willing to spend? Will this be a daily/weekend driven car? You will also need to upgrade the exhaust, suspension and tranny to get into the 10 club. The quickest way with the least amount of $$ would be a 350 forged bottom w/ good heads and a shot NOS.

Wow this really is another one of those I want to go 10's and I am brand new to racing posts. I would suggest you do a lot of reading first before you bust out with one of these posts.
Yes the cheapest way to get there is NOS. Anything is possible ONCE. Wasn't it Car Craft that took a junkyard 350 and slapped on a 250 shot? That would do it but only once.
You are going to need a cage, full suspension, drag radials, a bullet proof tranny, and one hell of a motor. There is your recipe.

Re: help 3rd gen guys!!!
The last guy is right. Buy a couple books, they are the best way to go. Look on ebay, I have seen great camaro books that I bought in stores for 35 bucks going for 12. Read, read, read...
Re: help 3rd gen guys!!!
LS7 and a 100 shot
I think you need to try for 12's first would be a much more realistic goal, give you experience. Then you can work for 11's. Then work for 10's.
If you try to hit 10's the first time I'm afraid your up for a major disappointment and a lot of wasted $$$...
A 12 second car is DAMN fast and nothing at all to be ashamed about!!!

Re: help 3rd gen guys!!!
Ok now 12's are a little more attainable. This is a setup I am thinking of when I finally can afford to buy a truck to put my 383 in.
Roller 350 block .030 over (block and machining $500)
Eagle fully forged rotating assembly (I am going with a 355 but a 383 setup is not much more) (have found for $800)
Fully ported Brodix Track 1 heads (in the neighborhood of $2000)
ZZX or equivelant cam ($200-$375)
Nice oiling system ($350)
Miniram intake or maybe just go with a stealth ram if money is really tight. ($50-$1500)
Then once I have had my fun I am going to be going with forced induction most likely a really large hair dryer. The setup above is not cheap but it would be very reliable and capable of making 400 RWHP easily. A friend is running very close to this in a 383 and has 450-460 RWHP with a lot of tuning left to do. So I can see when he is finished it being close to 500 RWHP.

Re: help 3rd gen guys!!!
that sounds like a combo that would work out pretty nice. i am still thinkning about my buildup, i think i might want to make a little faster than 12;s but i dunno, but just so you know i have raced a 10.90 car before so i am not new to the game.
Re: help 3rd gen guys!!!
Glad to hear you are not new, because there are a lot of people that come to sites like these and say I want 10's, but am only 16 years old and am broke. Third gens are not light cars so you really need a lot of power to push them into the 10's. Also a lof of people freak out when they start to look at how much it costs to go fast. The amout of money that I have put in my car and how much friends have done as well it is just scary, but the end result is all worth it.
Re: help 3rd gen guys!!!
i know all about the prices for parts, the first time i seen how much stuff costs i almost gave up, but it is worth it in every form. i really hope to soon get into drag racing more serious. something like bracket racing or outlaw stock, its more competitive, but it costs alot more money every weekend. so we will see what happens.
