Smile Headers for 91RS

I presently own a 1991 RS with a 305 TBI. I just replaced the timing chain in it (mileage 154K). I have had the vehicle for four yrs now and I want to do some mods to it to give it a little more GO power. Will a set of header work for this, if so what would be the right type to use. I may have to change out the chip also. Not looking to race just want that quick take off, from 0-60. What do u recommend.

Re: Headers for 91RS

First, I would say go with a catback system, and then headers. By the time the exhaust gets out of a set of high flowing headers on a stock system, it's just going to choke back up again on the restrictive stock exhaust. Then I would get a pair of shorty headers from Summit. I chose these because they were 40% cheaper than other leading brands, but had the EXACT same style of bending and the same guage metal. It's a pain getting them in there, a helping hand goes a long way when replacing those. Set a whole weekend aside for getting this job done, just incase you are like me and have the LAST header stud strip out on you.

If and when you do headers, make sure you re-tighten them down after a few weeks of use, and/or get some high temp silicon sealant. In alot of cases I have seen/heard about (including me) the heat causes the bolts to back out slightly, giving you a leak.

As far as a chip goes, I have heard that for mostly stock applications, they are next to useless...research this before you shell out triple didgets for one.

edelbrock TES headers/ypipe. Come with all the hookups to retain your emissions. There are better headers but these will work for what you want. Add a Catco or similar high flow cat and a 3" catback like a magnaflow, no flowmaster. You ought to pick up some good power from that. You wont need a chip.

Re: Headers for 91RS

A full exhaust upgrade including headers, high-flow cat, and 3" cat-back exhaust and muffler will run you about $1000 and give you about 25 more horsepower. Do not get the headers for TBI cars, as they are smaller to fit with the stock stuff. Get the TPI headers and have your exhaust shop put everything together.

I recommend Hooker 2055's for your setup.

Depending on which long tubes you get, ground clearance could be a problem. I have Hooker Super Competition headers and if I have a passenger in my car I can't go over speed bumps or take a steep grade.

Headman 68470's. There alot cheaper than the 2055's and they were a piece of cake to install. And the offer a Y-Pipe now. Just remeber to jack the motor up on the drivers side (that took no lie about 10 minute to do), and take the starter out on the passenger side and you all set.

Re: Headers for 91RS

Wouldn't 3.73's in an auto 305TBI cause the engine to almost instantly run up to it's weak 4500+ RPM range? Seems like 2.73 or 3.23's would do a much better job of keeping the LO3 in it's power curve. Maybe I am crazy, but just a thought.....

Definately. Even in a TPI car, most knowledgeable people would do 3.42's over 3.73's and 4.10's.

My old car with the 305TBI was great when I went to 3.73 gears, pulled great till it hit the speed limiter(110?), it actually still got great mileage too(26mpg, with the 2.73 it had, it was a 28mpg)

Re: Headers for 91RS

i have the hooker 2055's w/ Y pipe and they fit killer. they fit so well you can almost throw them at the motor and they fall in place. honestly, you will probably hafta lift the pass side a bit but other than that they fit great. i highly recommend getting them coated as well. helps for a neater eng compt and they do cool a tad bit quicker.

Re: Headers for 91RS

I just bought the edelbrock headers part # EDL-68723 from summitracing.com that are just for 3RD gen camaros. They are ceramic coated for cooler under hood temps and they claim it will knock off a full second 0 - 60. They come with all hardware. Even a new Y pipe. It uses all your emmision control equip. also. They are $399 but not bad for all you get. I'm installing them this week along with a TPI crate motor so I'll let you know how it goes. If this part number won't fit your car they can tell you what part will.
