Steel shim type gaskets need sealer. I use Permatex spray copper. Composition and Teflon type do not take sealer. I use a little RTV on intake gasket, but just around water ports to prevent weepers. Also use it on rail gaskets. Some guys leave the rail gaskets off altogether and just run a bead of RTV, but I've always used gaskets w/RTV.

i've had good luck with felpro gaskets. they have like a soft rubber around all the ports that seem to seal really well. plus they come off fairly easy when you dig back into the motor.
then for the valley i use felpro cork with adhesive on both sides and a little sealer at all corners.
