Haynes auto manuels suck.

Why can't they give me the distributor caps cylinder numbers? How am I suppose to know which is number 1 on the cap? I know the whole take out number 1 spark plug and crank the engine just until you feel the compression come outta it, and the rotor should be directly under the first cylinder's terminal on the cap. I need to know this exactly, cause I'm unsure of the distributors rotation. Is it clockwise, or counter clockwise. I hooked everything up clockwise, and the car wouldn't start. Only backfire when trying to start. So I gave up for the day before I took an ax to the engine. LOL, help me guys! 85 z28 305 computer controlled quadra jet 4bbl.

You're leaving out one all-important step. After you feel compression on #1 you have to roll the engine around manually until the timing mark lines up at 0* (the top-dead-center position.) THEN the rotor should be pionting at the number 1 cap terminal.

Also the rotor turns clockwise.
