See, my original one with 150,000 miles lasted 10 months with a 350 and another 8 with a 305 and me driving. I beat the snot out of it, car was so much fun for those 10 months, it was nice. But then thrid gear blew. So I fixed it, thought a new, fresh T5 with better parts will for sure last a while. Nope. Been a downhill slide ever since.

must have had a freak T5 in my 86. I drove my car hard pretty much all of the time, the only problems I had were a stock replacement clutch burning up after 2K miles (CenterForce Dual Friction solved that problem) and 3rd gear grinding when shifting really fast. and my car wasn't slow, 14.1@99 with an LG4 converted to a TPI.

yikes dude, if thats the case your damn lucky.....personally that scares the living hell out of me lol

I sold my entire T5 setup earlier this year since I didn't want to try and run my new motor with it.
New motor should net me 370rwhp and close to 570rwhp with the N20 and I know damn well that my old T5 wouldn't last behind that.

I just hope the T56 I end up putting in will survive.

hehe

sounds like its gonna be a good ride man.....the t56 will probably last awhile....but the nitrous will do it in eventually. i think you can have the t56 built to handle the power though, but i wouldnt do it until it breaks

I don't have it yet. It's still in my brothers 96 Trans Am.
When my motor is finished, I'll buy an A4 and swap with my brother since he wants to get into the 12's and doing an A4 with a stall is one of the easiest ways to go.
He is running 13.4 with bolt-ons and street tires.

How much TQ can a T-56 handle??? The TKO is rated @525ft/lbs but I'm told it can handle more if broken in right. Oh, I do agree bangin' gears does rock

I've read that the T56 in the f-bodies are rated at around 450 ft/lbs. I may have upto 600ft/lbs with my N20 shot, but I'll be spraying from a roll so I don't think it would do as much damage as if I tried to spray off the line at the track.

torque

guys the TKO is rated at 525 ft/lbs.....however, there are alot of people that abuse these trannies with waaay more power, and they live.

Im making over that now, once i get into some heavy spray (300 shot) in the spring, then i'll be worried about it. but any good transmission shop can build a tremec case to handle insane horsepower. and theres still the thing about it being smaller and lighter and cheaper lol.

also if you ever plan on using really deep gears the 6 speed might be a bit much, 1st and 2nd run out pretty quick in my car, with 4.10's 1st is gonna be a joke....an the gear ratio spread in a 6 speed is even closer because of the extra gear, so that means shifting even faster

the tremec case is alot smaller than the t56 cases because it doesnt have an extra gear (its wider) and thusly is pretty damn easy to work with

Thumbs up OIL CHANGE

I'm going to change the fluid in my T5 and add some LUCAS to see if it's still hard to shift.

guys. no offense, but we arent talking about an auto slush box here, the tranny isnt gonna be hard to shift because it needs more slippery fluid, or the internal clutches are worn out.... it could be hard to shift for several reasons,

1) the clutch is dragging
2) the tranny or bellhousing are running out (misaligned)
3) the synchros and or gears are history (most likely in this case)

zepher, im interested in how your gonna be spraying from a roll? i know the IHRA REQUIRES the use of a throttle activated switch..and im pretty sure the NHRA does too. thereby making sure your only spritzing the funny stuff at WOT. and you will most certainly be at WOT off the line.

I hear you LOUD and clear. I really think its partly a clutch and a synchro problem but I'm STILL gonna change the fluid which I haven't done since I've had it. Don't forget The CLUTCH is going to be changed also (centerforce dual friction).

I need this tranny to last until spring.... 383backinblack.

Thumbs up

sorry toney, i forgot that you only need this thing to last until spring i think you mentioned that before......i would do the same thing (maybe now is a good time to practice power shifting) hehehe

i just dont want some poor less knowledgable guy to read something inadvertently and think he can fix a junkyard t5 for his car with lucas

i just put that lucas tranny **** in my pickup's th400 twisted by a 454. that stuff works the ***** in the old goop pile. i was impressed. I had to pump almost 30qts of fresh fluid through the tranny(after draining it) to get it to come out clean hehe this too is only gonna last until spring
