Gutting air box. How do I do it?

I'm looking to pick up a few extra hp. I'm assuming you can gut the factory TPI air box for a little better air flow. Has anyone attempted it? I'm just afraid I'll pull it apart and not be able to seal it back together right.

On my 86 and 90 I just did what most people have done. Take the filters out, Remove the air box, then take the small baffles out then use a saw or dremmel to cut the bottom portion og the boxes off.

When you have an intake such as the one on TPI IROC's a CAI has no real advantages.

i cut out the bottom of the air boxes and got rid of all the plastic crap between the condensor and the front clip. I also removed the rectangle shaped pieces where the for lights are. then i went to home depot (ducting section)and got an adapter that went from the square (air filter side)to a three inch circle. i screwed the square side to where the air filters go.then i got a 90 degree piece that was 3 inch circle to about 8 to 10 inches across and 4 inches tall and mounted that behind the for lamps.i did every thing twice becauce there are 2 sides.the intake does not move at all very rigid.if you use ducting hose it will vibrate and cause turbulance.i had my fog lights out for about 2 months but i put them back in because it looks better.the cool part is you cant even tell its there.hope this helps.

P.S.--- YOU WILL HAVE TO CHANGE/CLEAN YOUR AIR FILTERS MORE OFTEN(get some kn filters if you do not already have them.

Awsome guy's. Thanks. Now, what about the Y-shaped factory plastic piece? You know, the piece that goes from after the filters to the MAF. Is there any way I can gut that. I heard there were sound baffles in there.

when i had my 87 iroc i removed some material on the Y piece. i shaved the square part just above the perches for the filters, don't think it did much but i figured it didnt' hurt.
on the other end of the Y i found a small lip on the inside of the round tube, just before the end, that went across the bottom of the tube. i removed that, resulting in a small hole in the bottom of the tube which i just filled in with fiberglass

I did it to my cousins Iroc for him the other day with a sawzall took all of 5 minutes for the whole operation. Not exactly tough. Use a 7mm socket to remove the four baffles and then cut the bottom of the air filter housings off. It is really self explanatory when you pull it out.

I was getting other parts too. I was too smart to believe that the CAI is all I will do. I had a Firebird which had the tube going to a can with a 3 in hole in it. The new air tube looked pretty much like the old stock one except it had a piece of aluminum in it to break up turbulance in the air intake from the hole in the fender that was already there.
