firing up new but dormant engine
firing up new but dormant engine
ok im almost at the stage of firing up my rebuilt engine BUT its been in storage for about 2 years (engine) anything i need to do before starting and any good break-in procedures
i would put in fresh oil and filter
the cheapest oil you can find thats not synthetic, as synthetic is too slippery to break it in properly. and cheap as you are going to change the oil after 100-500kms
take out the plugs and squirt some desiel fuel into the cylinders to lubricate the rings to prevent scoring of the walls from a dry start.
dont rev it up high
and let it warm up brfore you drive it

LPE had me do a break in with 4 qts 30W and 1 Qt of GM EOS for 1000 miles. I would buy a "luber" which inserts as a distributor would and spin the oil pump. That or hook up a screwdriver bit to a drill bit to spin it so the oil pumps around before you start it.
if u dont have a "luber" or a drill to do the other way, another way is to unhook the coil and spin the motor over for a couple seconds a few times and that will do the same thing. then hook the coil wire back up and see if itll fire.
ALSO,be sure to have a fire extinguisher nearby, better safe than sorry

Change the oil and filter before doing anything. After 2 years there's probably a lot of condensation in the oil.
The best luber is an old distributor because it seals the block at the cam bearings.
Find an old distributor. Take everything off the top so that you can put a 1/2" drill onto the shaft. Grind all the teeth off the distributor gear. Sping the oil pump with this cheap luber and if you can, watch the oil pressure. A second person can bump the engine over a few times by hand or pull the coil wire off and use the starter while the engine is being primed. Bumping the engine over gets oil only other moving parts that won't get oil if the engine isn't turning.
A few squirts of diesel into the spark plugs holes is good but tranny oil works just as good.
