Post Finally started to tear down the 305... some pictures

Finally. Its just about ready to be pulled after two days of work. The coolant lines from the heater core were the largest PITA thus far.

The largest thing I've done before this was an alternator, and I jumped in this alone, lol. Talk about a learning expirence.

Chuck, Remember there are 2 Ground connections attached to the back of the cylinder heads. There is one on each side. Also, you should take your accessory brackets off before you pull the motor out. Its not that hard, a few nuts and about 6 or 7 bolts if I remember correctly. It will help because you will have more space to pull the motor forward without hitting the "frame."

Looks good man, My motor looked much worse... The lifter valley was caked with burned, hard oil chunks all the way up to the bottoms of the cylinder heads.

The water pump, smog pump, and ac pump thing are gonna come off tomorrow. After that its just a few loose wires and the tranny.

I gotta figure out what the hell Im gonna do with the AC. I was going to keep it, but I busted off that freakin connector that goes on the top of the pump thingy. I was pissed. Maybe I can epoxy (sp?) it and it'll still work.

I was happy to see that it was as clean as it was under the valve covers. Everything looked great, but Im not sure if maybe the heads had been off it before. Did we get rubber valve cover gaskets from the factory? The ones I pulled off are nice enough to be used again.

My knuckles are yelling at me though

be prepared to dent the top back corner of the power steering pump to be able to get that side bracket off. gm just had to put a bolt there and thats what we had to do to my buddies blazer with a 4.3v6, and it appears to be the same brackets
