exhaust choices for a 305 tpi

My brother has an 87 iroc 305 tpi. He was wondering what catback would sound good on it. He was also wondering what kind of headers to look at with his ground clearance. He bought some edelbrock shorty's but I told him I didn't think they would do anything.

The hooker catback sounds great on these cars, its affordable and high quality. Thats what i would buy. The Edelbrock shorties probably won't add a ton of performance, but hey its a 305 and every little bit helps!

im the opposite, i have the edelbrock cat back and hooker 2055 header set and i like it. the headers can be done by a blind man and the cat back sounds killer even on a stock motor.

Headers on those cars are worth 10-15+ HP EASY, are you kidding me?

Look at the exhaust manifold for christ sake, it was designed with a ruler and a square.

They all sit low, as long as the headers are shorty or mid-length than he'll be fine. I had an 87 IROC with the hedman headers and hedman y-pipe, even lowered 1.5" it ground clearance was fine.

rice killer is right, the single largest EZ big gain mod for a TPI is headers and exhaust. as for clearance, its lowest point of the Y pipe is about frame level, or close to the poil pan hight. its not bad and if your an observant person you should be ok. mine is dropped pretty decent and i dont rub too often.

As far as mufflers go, it's up to you in terms of what kind of sound you want. Everybody does Flowmasters. But they do have that classic high perf. muscle car sound. They're also loud all the time. A bit one dimensional in that regard. The Hookers are nice because they're quiet at idle and for driving around town. But once you step on the gas, they get louder.

Borla come with about 15 pieces it seems. I've never really gotten the bypass plate idea. Most people run them with the bypass plate so that about 90% of the exhaust skips the muffler. Why bother?

I went with the GMMG. Cheap? No. But they're stainless steel and have no drone on the highway. The no drone was a much enjoyed benefit over my old Flowmaster setup. They're intimidating at idle. Way louder than the Flowmaster at full throttle, but still managable around town. There is no deeper sounding exhaust that I know of. When you get into the upper RPM's it adds a bit of a Ferrari type sound while still retaining the muscle car sound. It has more flavours of sound in that regard. It also looks cool from the back.
