Engine whining...

Finally had a nice spring day here in Michigan and I took my car out of hibernation. When it's running, the car sounds great from almost anywhere. But as you move towards the front the sound of my engine almost overpowers the exhaust. Its hard to explain what it sounds like, almost like a low tone whining. My father and cousin(knowlegable mechanic) think it is just my timing gears. Any opinions on what else it may be? And if it the gears, is there any way I can tone it down and make it quieter? If it can't be done it's not that big of a deal to me, but if it's simple to do, I wouldnt mind shutting it up so all you hear is my exaust rumble.

u check the oil level before u fired it up? should have.
dont think it would be the power steering pump, they usually only make noise when u turn the wheel and its under pressure..not sitting still and not moving the wheel.

a good way to find out if its the timing gears or not,is get a LOOONG screw driver or extension (screw driver works better)and put 1 end on the timing gear cover and put your ear on the other end. kinda sounds dumb but if it is the gears,u will hear the same noise that u hear outside the car...but alot louder in ur ear. my dad showed me that trick on my bad water pump one time....hope that helps ya!

yea i checked all the fluid levels before i started it. And i know its not the power steering pump. So i guess I'll try out your idea and see if its the gears. Thanx guys
