I have an 86 ta and it has the electric release motor for the hatch.... sometimes it will take spells and not want to latch( pull down the hatch) and it has done it again. The hatch won't even latch. What should I look at first. I'm fairly certain the motor is still good. Why won't it latch?

 

When it's open, is the assembly on your car up or down? If the latching assembly is down, your motor is probably bad. That happened to me. But if it's up and it won't latch, you got me.

 

It was down, but i took the back of the car apart this morning and I adjusted the whole assembly up. There is a little play in the bolts enough to move it about 1/8 of an inch or so, and that did the trick. When i slammed the hatch it took ahold and pulled it down.......Damn pontiacs......got to love em
