EGR Removal
EGR Removal
I have a friend with an 85 TPI 305 Z-28, and his EGR is bad. A place is telling him it is gonna cost about $450 to do because they have to remove the intake to get to the EGR. Is this true? I know on my LT1 is takes about 5 minutes to pull the EGR, but I have never done one on a TPI motor. If anybody knows, please chime in. Thanks. The car is an A4 btw, not sure if that will matter or not.
Re: EGR Removal
Yeah you do have to remove the plenum. It isn't a difficult job, but for a repair shop including parts $450.00 is probably not too far off. I hate to sound like a jerk but these cars are getting pretty old and those of us who love and own them need to learn how to work on them. You'll bust a few knuckles curse a little and maybe even learn something, but the satisfaction of fixing it yourself is great. Plus you'll save a few bucks.
Re: EGR Removal
****, a week leight, i just did a egr delete and mine was in working condishion....now its in the dumpster in back of movie galery, i agree with the other guy its like 10 bolt with the 2 egr bolts that need to be removed
Re: EGR Removal
Do it yourself, its easy. Just make sure to attach the MAT sensor hookup before reinstalling the plenum. The MAT sensor is on the underside of the plenum in the back and is a pain in the *** to plug in with the plenum on. The whole project will cost like $60 if your old gaskets are bad.
Re: EGR Removal
agreed do it yourself! all you need is a ratchet and a torx bit. Take off the runners with the plenum still attached is really the easiest way i found. Replacing the egr is 2 bolts just make sure you clean the gasket surface when you put it back on. Then bolt your plenum back together.
Depending if the plenum has ever been apart you probably have to get a set of intake gaskets from GM for when u put the runners back on.
I would also strongly reccomend you use a torque wrench when putting the intake plenum back on because everything is aluminum and easy to strip.

Re: EGR Removal
A new EGR valve runs about $50 from a typical parts store, most of them are even GM parts in a different vendors box. Replace the gaskets, Felpro# MS 93160 is a gasket set for just the runners and throttle body, it'll save you about $20 over the full TPI set since you don't need the fuel injector O-rings, or intake manifold gaskets. While you're in there you might as well replace the diagnostic switch on the EGR valve too, it's under $20 from the dealership. I would also recommend using antiseize on the runner bolts and exercising caution threading them back in, they like to crossthread if they aren't lined up perfectly.
Another tip for making this job quick and easy... Unbolt the throttle body and the throttle cable bracket from the plenum, leave all the wiring and the coolant connections to the throttle body alone. It won't be in your way and you won't have to reset the TV cable or drain the coolant, and you don't have to worry about losing the retaining clips for the throttle cable/TV cable and cruise control.
