Effects of not having o2 sensor

Hey guys, i might buy some headers that dont have an o2 bung. IF i get them what do I do about the o2 sensor? just unplug it? will it set off any codes? how much would it cost to have an O2 bung welded in?

it will most likely set off a code, you will also fail the emissions portion of your inspection. Better of just getting the headers with the o2 bunghole in 'em.

haha you need an O2 sensor, the computer will go nuts throwing codes and your car will run like a dog because the computer relies largely on that to calculate your air/fuel ratio.....a bung should be cheap to have welded in by any exhaust shop

It will set a code, throw your car in "Limp" mode (no power) and your cruising gas mileage will definately suffer and probably also the city mileage too.

Yup, you'll go to open loop and rely on your MAF sensor rather than the O2. You may not notice a significant power loss but its a pain in the *** to drive the car without an O2 sensor. It'll surge at idle if you have modified anything. While the factory style O2 sensor isn't really all that accurate, its way more accurate than your open loop programming. (open loop is your "warm-up" stage if you will) So, do everything you can to keep that O2.

Won't there be a power loss when the car goes into limp home mode? Since there will be 0 V coming from the sensor, won't the ECM see it as an extremely lean condition and try flood the engine with more fuel and screw it up?

Yep, Limp Mode = Bog the motor full of fuel Mode.

Have the bung welded in before the install, should be able to talk some welder into doing it for a six pack, and the bung is about $5 so it'll be about $12-$15. Depends on what kinda beer the welder drinks.

Not sure if this applies but I once had the driver side of the injectors shorted out and the O2 sensor kept reading an extremely lean conditon. It would flood out the motor. Finally found it when we examined the pulse width of the injectors and found they were about 2.8ms when they should have been around 1.5ms.

just drill a hole weld in the bolt that holds the o2
