ECM vs. Mechanical readings?
ECM vs. Mechanical readings?
Hey. So I've been driving my camaro lately, and the temperatures my dash cluster where reporting where frighteningly high. So, I borrowed my dads Auto Xray, and was doing a real-time ECM Coolant Temperature readout from cold to hot. When i start the car up (cold) the ECM shows the temperature climbing, and it stops ~217* (about what it should be in this weather) how ever, my dash-cluster reports about 30* higher. ECM agrees with all my other on-dash instruments (Tach, Speed) as well as TPS, Mixture, Etc.
Should i trust the ECM? I just put a new ECM Coolant Sensor in, if that makes a differance.
What is the best way to check engine temperature dirtectly? and how hard is it to install a new temperature sensor into the block?
Thanks, I wish i new more about these cars so i could be answering questions instead of asking them all the time

Re: ECM vs. Mechanical readings?
On my TPI unit, I have a temp sensor for the ECM in the front of the engine in the manifold and a temp sensor in the head between #1 and #3 cylinder. So, the one in the head is waht the gauge is reading and the one in the manifold is what the ECM is reading.
Re: ECM vs. Mechanical readings?
Exactly, the one for the ECM reads at the waterpump on LT1 and prolly that or manifold on 3rd gens, the temp there will be lower then the one in the head, you could try switching the temp sensor aswell. I know on the LT1 its pretty much the same on head/ecm but its still off by a bit, fergot how much, but the LT1 has reverse cooling and bleeds off temp at the heads so the temp would be better distributed.
