Driveshaft
Driveshaft
Hi,
Got a quick question. I have a 84 Sport Coupe, Z28. I need to take my driveshaft off and there is a metal bar (think its some kind of support for the frame) that covers the driver side and it is hard to gain access to unbolt the shaft. I can see the 2 bolts in the rear (again on the drivers side) but need to get it off from the front and it looks likes it clips in and there are no visible bolts. So if anyone knows for sure what that metal bar is for or any idea on taking it off that would be great.
Thanks ~

You might want to be careful doing that. That torque arm has a part in keeping the rearend straight. If your hand happens to be above the yolk in the rear end area when you pull the bolts out and release the arm from the rear it may twist upward and pin your hand between it and the car. I have been real lucky and this has not happened to me. I have removed it several times and only noticed movement the last time I did it. I have heard of people getting bit pretty good by it.
The arm goes into a mount on the trans tail up front. I think you may have to loosen the mount to pull the arm out. I can't remeber without looking. I think you can just loosen the top bolt.

jack the car up using stands for safty. loosen the drive shaft bolts then put the car in neutral and spinn the driveshaft put the car back in park and loosen the the other 2 bolts. then you should be able spin all the bolts out. slide the drive shaft forward into the tranny unitl you can move the shaft to the side then pull the shaft out of the tranny. make sure to put a pan under the tail shaft unless you want to coat your floor.
