This is probably the most common problem with all 3rd gens. As a result there is a very common fix. You'll need a hinge replacement kit. The kit includes two new machined upper hinge pins and a new lower hinge pin with bushings. One kit fixes one side. Two kits per car and the typical kit costs about $70-$80. There are a number of vendors that sell the kits. A google search for 3rd gen door hinge kit will list a number. I just did both doors on my daughters 91 3rd gen with kits I bought from Classic Industries. While the kits work and raise the doors back up I can tell you the job can be a real pain in the rear. Driver side took me 3 hours (learning as I went) and the passenger door took me 5 hours. Ran into every problem there was.

Now that it's done the doors work as they are supposed to and I shouldn't have to replace hinges ever again.

I fixed mine with a $3.99 kit from the "HELP" section of the local auto parts store. It was just my lower hinge that was bad. It took maybe an hour to do.

I used the greaseable kit sold by www.top-downsolutions.com to repair the upper hinges in my IROC. If you have any questions about the kit or the proceedures, contact Lon @ top-downsolutions. He's very helpful and will offer a tip or two to help get your project restored.

Good luck

Hi Richard--- Nice seeing ya!

...another vote for Lon and his company. Those door pin kits are made by AndyZ28, the guy who helped me figure out the 1LE braking project. He also hangs out on thirdgen.org They are well thought-out solution that will fix your door hinge problems, most likely forever.

Certainly agree with that. Could really have used a second set of hands when I was trying to get the new hinge pins in.

Guys...guys...guys... That's what a 30-foot towing strap, an engine hoist, and a transmission jack were made for! That way you don't have to share your beer!

Use the right tools next time!

Yeah I considered that after reading about it but then i figured it would take longer to set that up than just deal with it.

I'm sorry but there is no need for this expensive kit at all. Buy some door pin kits in the help section of your local part store (the kits come with bushings also) and line up the stock hinges. Either way you have to loosen the bolts holding the hinges and line them up anyway. I did this with the help of a friend and it took about 20 minutes to get it perfect. I hope this helps.

your half right, but you cant buy the upper kit in the parts store like what Lon sels over at TDS. otherwise id have done bought them. plus Lon sells 2 diff versions of this kit, a non greasable and a greasable. your NOT gonna find this in the parts store.
and another thing about the upper hinge, the pin has to be cut out so this isnt exactly a wam bam thank you mam quick fix.
if your lower hinges are worn and your uppers are healthy (which is rare) then you can do a half fix and not have to remove the door. i did it on my formula till i threw in the towel and bought the full kit from Lon and now my door shuts like a champ.

I need to get one of those kits for my drivers side door. I know the lower hinge pin probably needs to be replaced. But how do you tell if the upper hinge pin is bad and needs to be replaced?
