you might have to lift the motor but ya dont have to Pull it all the way out.

Losen the Mount bolts & lift it about 6inches

i can't believe you gotta raise the engine...but does anybody else have any input on this too...On my new camaro, the owner before me looks like he welded the headers about 40 thousand times instead of just replacing them...So where the 4 tubes meet on one side, there is a whole bunch of welds that look like chicken ****. and now i have an exhaust leak there, and when i rev it up real hi, a little flame will shoot out, and my car sounds like ****. so i'm going to need to replace those, but if its too big of a shop, i'm gonna say screw it, wait till this winter, and throw some new ones on when I hopefully pull the engine out of there this winter to do some other work on it. Is it true you gotta raise the engine up? me and my dad were looking at it, and it looks like you might be able to squeeze them out of there....i need some advice on what i should do.

I have only had the motor out once to install headers and that was because the headers and motor was already out. Otherwise, you just slip them in. I have heard that some people lift the engine a little out but I never had to.

hmmm....i'm trying to decide if i should wait or do the project now...because it just took me and my dad 2 nights to put on a new header gasket because we had to unbolt the ac, and some other stuff just to get to it...and i need the car by the end of the month so it has to be done...so i'm trying to debate if i should tackle this or not...my dad is getting some stuff from work, its like a 2 part gooy ceramic stuff that we are gonna cake on there to see if that will temperarily seal it...If that doesn't work who knows i might tackle this project....but ARE YOU SURE THE ENGINE DOESN'T HAVE TO MOVE? because that would turn into a huge project.....

jacking the motor up is 123 take off you distributor cap, unbolt the motor from the mounts, then lift, under the harmonic ballancer with a 2x4 on top of the jack, thats how i did it

yea but my question is do i have too? I think we are gonna try this goo stuff my dad has from work, and if that doesn't work, we'll figure out something else...And i got one other question, how hot do exhaust systems get right by where the y pipe connects to the header? I need to know because the stuff my dad is getting has a heat range, and i wanna make sure it will be able to withstand the heat of the exhaust pipe....

jackin the motor up is easy....just take out the driver side mtr mount bolt, jack up on the oil pan w/ a piece of 2x4 or somethin like that on it,and jack it up a couple inches. its alot easier that way, thats how i did it. jackin up on the pan w/ that bolt out is fine...but u have to use wood.

Like everyone said...jacking the motor is not a big deal. I only had to do it on the driver's side, and only about 2" up.

An exhaust manifold will typically run anywhere from 400-700*F depending on how the car is tuned and how hard you're driving it.

I REPEAT DO NOT JACK UP THE CAR BY THE OIL PAN ....
you could cause it to bend and cause bad oil circulation....or by the harmonic balancer use a cherry picker...infact look in any gm shop manual and will say the same thing i will show you horror stories, and scan in that part of the page....

btw...hehe what a good first post some good advice ...anyone who cuts a corner like that is just lazy

I've never had a set that didn't go in normally. When I bought my SLP headers someone said I'd have to lift the driver side a little. Nope. Went right in and it rubs the steering shaft like most others.

Goodluck! if anything, try a jack under the Harmonic balancer even while it's bolted in. The old rubber mounts might give a little and help ease your stuggles..

u dont have to jack up ther motor just take your old exhaust manifolds and y pipe off and install the new, could do it in a day if motivatied enough might have to mod the ac bracket (if you still have the multiple belt system) i used flowtechs didnt have a problem at all didnt even hit the steering shaft

For shorties I believe you don't need to jack up the motor.
