do I need limited slip additive?

I am in the process of changing my gear oil and I am replacing it with quaker state 80W-90 GL-5, It says it is specifically for limited slip differentials, so do I need to use additive.

The bottle said it "doesn't need limited slip top treatment nor is it recommended" Is that the same thing as the additive the chilton book talks about.

Thanks
John

Everybody that I've talked to that's used a non-GM posi addative has had chatter and noise. For what it takes, dump a bottle of the GM crap in and forget about it.

Fill it up without and go slowly around the corners. You will hear the clutch pack "breaking loose" and that should tell you that you need the additive. Just suck out some and run the engine in gear to mix it up and then top it off.

By the way, someone once mentioned that the lube (non synthetic) is made from whale ***. Any truth?

That's why we need people like you in FL to do a "Taste and Tell", so to speak, and inform us of the answer.

Look, I don't really know. Just something someone mentioned once.

Here's a link where it was mentioned. I believe it was mentioned way back when maybe 6 months ago.

My buddy changed the gear lube in his Iroc.He put in straight Mobil 1 gear lube with no additive. It started making noise. He did the above metioned,Drained some out and put in the GM additive and it quieted right back down.I would strongly recommend using the GM additive. Some people don't care using different brands in their cars but I use the Motorcraft in my Mustang and GM in the Camaro. If it aint broke don't fix it.

That guy got it backwards, a long time ago the additive was made from oil that came from the HEAD of the SPERM WHALE, not the other end of it!!!

Head of a sperm whale, sperm of a head whale, it's all good.

Anyway, there's one thing I forgot to mention... the jury is still out on whether the 9 bolt aussie rears need the posi addative. Some years GM said you did, some years they said you didn't, but just like I said above, for the sake of a couple bucks, there's no reason to skip it.
