What is the difference between these two tpi engines that the auto has 195 hp and the manual has 220 stock? Also what would need to be done to get the manual trans 305 to 275-285 hp and it still be an everyday car..if this is possible..

 

Mostly the cam.

Normal smallblock mods can easily bring a 305 to that power level.

 

yup, cam. for 88-89 the AT cam is .350/.384 179/194 109.0 LSA

the cam for 350/305 MT is .415/.430 207/213 117.0 LSA.

in 87 the AT 305 TPI is the same and for the 350/305 MT the numbers drop just a tad but not too much.

88-89 had the largest cam of all years for the TPI.
as for mods, headers are the single best large mod you can do for a TPI.

 

It's weird how the 305 TPI auto HP is up and down year to year:

'85= 215hp
'86= 190
'87=190
'88=195
'89=195
'90=210
'91=205
'92=205

 

those appear to be the automatic ratios, i know for sure the 88-89 numbers you posted are. stick is 225 hp/295 tq. whats strange is the T/A is rated less than the GTA and FORMULA . T/A is rated 215 hp/ 285 tq with a 5 speed.
