Unhappy Detonation sucks.

I get that good old ratteling sound from the engine when I step on it when I'm going down the inter state.
I blame the 3.08's, the auto trans that dosen't like to down shift and no CAI.
It kind if drags when it detonates, that's what sucks.
What could I do to fix it besides 89 or 92 octain gas?
2 things I don't realy know that good are heli's and auto trans.
Also my trans is shifting in and out of park kind of hard and it won't let me put the shifter down into 1st and 2nd and some times I can't get it into 3rd (regular drive, OD works fine).
I'm guessing it's linkage or it wasn't hooked up/ajusted right when the trans was put back in. Any one know what could cause the shifter to be a pain in the @$$ like that?

I don't think this has anything to do with your gear ratio or auto trans. The linkage might not be adjusted right but I won't know it till I see it.

Perhaps it is the carbon buildup in the cylinders or maybe the injectors are clogged or you don't have enough fuel.

What engine?

Running the highest octane you can will help, but I'd look at your timing and see where it is at first.

I still have not got en the casting # so it could be a 305 or 350, what ever it is it's a farly new engine, i don't think there could be to much carbon build up.
When its warmed up and ideling it smells rich. It drinks plenty of gas too.

Check your O2 sensor. Also, make sure you don't drive the car too soft. I got a decent amount of carbon buildup in my RS (which is sitting with a spun rod bearing right now) from babying it all the time and never getting above 2500rpm. I don't have that problem in the IROC...
